Edward Casino: Ave Atque Vale,
By Grady Harp (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Choir of Angels (Audio CD)
The recent death of Edward Casino strikes a sad chord for music lovers in Los Angeles and for those who have been fortunate enough to hear his compositions and his conducting of his vocal ensemble I Cantori. Casino was a perfectionist both in composition and in the repertoire he placed before the public. His concerts, especially those in the rotunda of the City Hall in Pasadena where this recording was made, never failed to lift the spirit as well as stimulate the intellect. On this collection of works the spectrum of his joys in works from the ancient past as well as from the present is obvious. They range from the Magnificat by Francisco Lopez Capillas to Stravinsky's setting of the Ave Maria, to the haunting contemporary Angle's Flight by William Kennerly, John Cage's mesmerizing 'In a landscape' for solo harp, to the many Spanish works by composers past and present form South America, Spain, and the addition of a work of Japanese origin. The performance is secure and committed, mirroring the manner in which Edward Casino lived his life. He will be missed. Grady Harp, December 10

Ma...I felt as if I really was listening to His angels!,

Every song on this album was excellently song. The singers, whether one of them sang solo, or all sang together as a group, sounded as if one could actually hear the 9 choirs of angels singing God's praises in Heaven. The overtone and base voices were very beautiful to listen to. I hope that I Cantori will make more albums of this (choral) music in the future.
