5.0 out of 5 stars A Choral Classic......
Choral music at its best. Bright, sharp, uplifting....Anthony way the solo treble, matured as a chorister rather earlier than most, as he was only aged about 11 when this lovely recording was made.

His Panis Angelicus is certainly one of the most gentle and enjoyable I've personally bought by a young male artist. Superior to Charlotte Churche's recording of the same song, also made when she was about the same age, although both are sweet and ethereal.
All the choir in this wonderful musical accompianiament to the absorbing tv adaptation of the same name, perform to perfection and I'd highly recommend The Choir to any fans of classic choral music.

I fell in love with this music while watching the Masterpiece Theatre production of 'The Choir' back in 1995. Anthony Way is simply incredible; not only as a singer but as an actor in this his debut role. Sad to say the DVD of the mini-series is next to impossible to find, but thank heavens the CD is still around. I recomend this soundtrack to anyone who loves great choral music. Buy it now while it is still available!

5.0 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fanA, September 23, 2008

A SUPERIOR SOUNDTRACK AS SOUNDTRACKS GO!
Soundtracks do not normally attract my attention, but this one is difficult to ignore. The Masterpiece Theatre production of 1995 is based on Joanna Trollope's book 'The Choir', which you don't really have to read to enjoy the soundtrack. I read the book, but did not watch the Masterpiece Theatre series, but makes no difference to my enjoyment of the recording.

The recording is a very interesting and very well performed potpourri of the music of many varied composers such as: Benjamin Britten, Charles Stanford, Handel,Tavener, Franck, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Samuel Wesley, Thomas Tallis and the Polish composer who filled in the dramatic instrumental interludes : Stanislas Sycewicz.

The lead choir boy is Anthony Way, whose name is familiar to many who listen to the many fine English male choirs, for he has been a member of St. Paul's Cathedral Choir for several years. He has a typical boy soprano sound: clear, a bit breathy with precise diction and pleasant to hear. The Gloucester Cathedral Choir perform several selections all skillfully done and most enjoyable. The King's College Choir under the direction of Willcocks perform one selection as does the Academy of St. Martin under the directin of Marriner. Every musical contribution is first-rate and if you like compilations, this is a good one.
