Book Description

April 15, 2000
As Bruce Lee once said, "To know oneself is to study oneself in action with another person."

After suffering a trauma that would eventually shape his outlook on life, jeremy Little finishes high school and leaves for Boston to study drama. He drops out in his first year and becomes obsessed with martial arts training. Eventually he owns his own school, finds a girlfriend, and things seem to be looking up until one of his students kills a gay man. The resulting publicity destroy's Jeremy's business and he returns home to the small Alberta town of Seymour where he is forced to confront his old demons. Jeremy struggles with his fear as he learns to open himself up to his family and the possibilities of love.

Choke Hold is an original, quirky novel that follows the life of a young man who feels torn between the need to defend himself and the desire to stop fighting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Could be better., June 23, 2003

The story is pretty interesting, but I'm guessing this is the author's first novel. Throughout the book, the voice sounded either weak, borrowed or forced. Readable, but barely.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull first effort, August 29, 2002

This review is from: Choke Hold (Paperback)
Growing up in Alberta, I was quite excited when I was told of this book by a friend. After reading Choke Hold, I was disappointed. The story is not very reflective of life on the prairies and I think this came from the authors attempt to mimic other writers (Bret Easton Ellis) instead of finding his own voice. Being a native Albertan, I'll pick up Babiak's second effort when it is released (gotta support local writers) but hopefully the style will be more original.

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't enjoy it at all., August 11, 2003

I found this book to be a bit smug and too cute for it's own good. The author tries to place importance on the most trivial things and in the end, the reader is left bored.
