4.0 out of 5 stars The little town of SALTLICK April 25, 2011
Format:Paperback
Debut author, Kaye George, gives us a hilarious ride through SALTLICK, Texas - not Saltlike as printed on the jacket and in the description...I happen to like Saltlick better, and apparently so did Kaye!

Yes I understand the irony of me, Kate George, reviewing Kaye George, but wait until you hear this - we both write humorous mysteries, we're both at the same publishing house and we both write about single, female protagonists. How much stranger could it be?

We first meet Kaye's protagonist, Imogene Duckworthy, at her uncle's dinner in Saltlick, Texas, just as she's throwing in the towel. Immy has bigger dreams and she's leaving waitressing to become a private Eye. Okay, I know, it's supposed to be private I. As in private investigator. But I've always enjoyed the imagery that Eye brings up. After all they are looking for things, right? Never mind.

Imogene Duckworthy is all about breaking out of her rut and improving the life of her mother, her daughter and herself. But when Uncle Huey kicks the bucket and Immy is afraid that her mother is implicated in his demise she has to implement her plans on the run. Does that stop her? No way.

Choke is a dust devil of a ride through the Texas landscape of Immy's life. It's a fun, face paced first novel, packed with interesting characters and a surprise ending. Choke is great reading if you don't take your murders too seriously, and you like you stories action packed. I'm looking forward to reading more about Imogene Duckworthy, kudos Kaye, for giving me an enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Immy Duckworthy, would-be sleuth. May 31, 2011
Format:Paperback
Imogen Duckworthy - love the name - and her mother, the eccentric Hortense, go on the lam after being suspected of causing her Uncle Hugh's death by ramming a frozen sausage down his throat. Imogen's teenage dreams of becoming a private detective, ala Nancy Drew, appear to be within reach, aided by the purchase of old-style text books on solving crime. To Immy's delight, this ambition becomes a reality, when she is achieves an interview and then employment in a real private investigator's office. However, the experience is somewhat of a shock to Immy, who imagined she would be a fully qualified PI the first day of her employment.

Nothing daunted, she forges ahead with her investigation and the suspects mount up, as Ms Duckworthy tries various ways of avoiding the law, employing some dubious disguises.

Kay George's naive and likeable young female sleuth grapples - literally, in the case of the delectable Baxter and figuratively - with some rather seedy characters before all is revealed. Although I picked the murderer out early in the piece, I was mistaken by which of her suitors eventually wins Immy and her daughter, Drew.

Overall, a funny, energetic, good natured read, particularly for young women who will relate to Immy's outlook on life.

By D. Love
Format:Paperback
Imogene's life goal is to be a detective and when her mother is arrested and jailed for her uncle's murder, Imogene decides to start her own investigation to clear their names. This quirky and humorous story will have you cheering for Immy as she inadvertently with her actions figures out who-dun-it. With an adorable cast including Imogene, her mother and her precious daughter and amusing dialogue, this pleasantly read story will have you yearning for more adventures with Imogene Duckworthy.

Seemed pretty mundane. Don't know why it won any awards. Amateurish effort, but I'm a reader, not a writer, so try it yourself.
