What Doctors Usually Don't Tell You About Cholesterol,
By Edwin Scroggins "Author of How to Self-Publis... (Richardson, TX USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Cholesterol Revitaliser: Insider Secrets to Revitalising Your Health and Lowering Your Cholesterol Naturally! (Paperback)
If your doctor has prescribed a drug to control your cholesterol levels, did that doctor also advise you about the possibility of using selective dieting and exercise to do this? My wife's doctor failed to discuss these options with her before prescribing Simvastatin. Even though we were both concerned about the possible side effects of this drug, she has been taking it for the last nine months. But happily, Stuart Brown's book, CHOLESTEROL REVITALISER, recently revealed to us a multitude of non-drug, natural remedies to combat this silently spreading killer.
Having been the science editor of a large science website for several years, Stuart became interested in researching the use of herbal treatments, vitamins, and exercise to control cholesterol levels. In an e-mail to me concerning his book, Stuart said, "I have endeavoured throughout to backup anything I have said with scientific research, studies and links to corroborative resources. . . . It is surprising quite how many practical steps can be taken to lower cholesterol that don't involve conventional statin medications, and there is a large body of science supporting both herbal treatments and others (such as eating avocado for instance) that you wouldn't immediately think of." One look at the book's table of contents will show you the comprehensive scope of Stuart's research. Here in one collection is truly everything you need to know about how to control your cholesterol: 1. Stuart begins by defining "What is cholesterol?" He explains HDL and LDL levels and the causes that push these levels out of acceptable ranges. Then, in seven other chapters, he discusses and explains the following topics: 2. Dieting to lower cholesterol and four different types of dietary fats: monounsaturated, saturated, polyunsaturated, and trans fats. 3. Instructions for preparing eight kinds of food dishes that lower cholesterol. 4. An amazing list of herbal and natural remedies for lowering cholesterol, the use and effectiveness of currently prescribed pharmaceutical drugs, and the uses of "super foods" and "lifestyle changes" (exercise strategies, quitting smoking, etc.). 5. How to communicate with your doctor and how to question him or her about diagnosis, prognosis, and treatments of and for your high cholesterol. Also included are the "explosions" of eight myths about cholesterol. 6. "Three insider secrets" on how to lower your cholesterol. I will leave you to discover these secrets yourself in the book. 7. Where and how to shop for cholesterol-lowering foods, along with suggestions on establishing good shopping habits and "6 steps to checking your shopping cart." 8. A "cholesterol goldmine" of additional resources from which you may extract valuable information on treating cholesterol excesses. These eight chapters contain much more valuable advice than I have noted above. But WAIT! Stuart is not through yet! Condensed in three appendices, you will find an amazing list of cholesterol-lowering vegetables and fruits, along with instructions on how to read food labels. And, all this is followed by a glossary of eighteen cholesterol terms, words you need to understand in order to communicate with your doctor and to understand the options for your treatments. (Stuart advises his readers to work closely with their doctors to measure and control cholesterol levels and their treatments.) No matter what you already know about dealing with high cholesterol, reading Stuart Brown's book will expand your knowledge to a degree that may change, or even save, your life. You will find his book well-organized and written in an unusually easy to read style. I highly recommend this book and predict that it will become the most cited, the most helpful, and the most authoritative reference for the non-drug, natural treatment of high cholesterol. Cholesterol Revitaliser will equip you to make a new start to your health and your life. A uniquely practical guide to better cholesterol health,

One of the oldest clichés in the world of books on medical topics is that they must always be written by "qualified experts." This is nonsense. In fact when I am working with healthcare clients on writing material for patients to read, I always say that probably the LAST people in the world who should write it are doctors or scientists. With the best will in the world, they're too close to it, too hamstrung by protocol and scientific etiquette, and they can't know how it feels to be a patient. What experienced journalists like Stuart Brown offer, however, is they have been trained to know how it feels - as well as to ask the same questions to which ordinary mortals want answers ... and to know how to find and present them.
So as you'll find in Brown's extremely well researched book about cholesterol, you get a goldmine of information - well backed up by references to medical studies, trials, etc - presented in a down-to-earth and refreshing way; not along the well-trodden "doctor-speak" path, but written from one human being to another. Brown frequently reminds readers to consult their doctors, and not merely to take his word for it, so there is no way that the medical profession should find anything to criticise here. There's a bonus, too; this book is much more than a valuable resource for learning about cholesterol and managing its excesses. In fact perhaps without originally intending it, Brown has written a lively, amusing and practical manual for any of us to use to improve our health overall.

Cholesterol Revitaliser: Insider Secrets to Revitalising Your Health and Lowering Your Cholesterol Naturally!
Stuart Brown 978-0956436306 Revitaliser Publishing Medical books are mostly written by experts, but the ones that need to write them are the ones that researches them. Stuart Brown researched very well on all that he could find on cholestrol and has made a great reference to medical studies, and trials. It is presented in the best way for everyone to understand, without the doctor-speak. Mr. Brown reminds everyone to consult with their doctorsm and not to just take his word or anyones for what is best for them. Cholestrol Revitaliser, is a practical Manuel for everyone to improve their health overall. Everyone needs to read this book, and keep a copy of it in their own library, I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to find knowledge of their own health.

Quick and easy read on realistic cholesterol management,
This review is from: Cholesterol Revitaliser: Insider Secrets to Revitalising Your Health and Lowering Your Cholesterol Naturally! (Paperback)
British author Stuart Brown releases his new book, "Cholesterol Revitaliser: Insider Secrets to Revitalising Your Health and Lowering Your Cholesterol Naturally!" in an effort to shed some light on this confusing subject. While scores of books have already been written on cholesterol and its impact on good health, Brown's book is short, sweet, and to the point. He presents his information in an `executive summary' sort of way and doesn't try to impress or confuse his audience with medical terminology. "Cholesterol Revitaliser" is the `down and dirty' for quick cholesterol management.
Brown breaks his book down into several sections: the basics, eating right, cooking right, treatments, doctors, `insider secrets' (his recommendations), grocery shopping, and additional resources. The basics obviously cover what cholesterol is and how and why it affects the body the way it does. Eating, cooking, and shopping right conveys food choice and preparation recommendations while the treatment section covers both natural and pharmaceutical ways of lowering the numbers. His `insider secrets' are mind and lifestyles change suggestions that would make managing one's cholesterol much easier if implemented. My favorite `secret' (and the one which also stands as a personal pet peeve) is not rewarding children with food. This `secret' can do so much more than change cholesterol numbers; it can lessen the chance of obesity later. Using food as a reward teaches children to equate feeling good about themselves with junk food. Later on, these children begin using the same types of food when experiencing self-esteem issues which can lead to weight gain and even obesity if not controlled. Obesity leads to more self-esteem problems which require more food to feel good and the cycle continues. Simply alleviating food from a reward system has the potential to completely avoid this dangerous cycle altogether. While taking into account the `Queen's English' spelling style, "Cholesterol Revitaliser" does have some minor grammatical errors - mostly sentence fragments and improper capitalization. There are also a couple of redundant areas. For example, chapter two has a section called, "Cut Down On the Salt" and then chapter four covers the same information in a section called, "Reduce Salt". The only really outstanding `oops' in the book is in this sentence, "Take a leaf out of the Adidas Ad (sic), and, `Just Do It!" Nike execs will be fuming... "Cholesterol Revitaliser: Insider Secrets to Revitalising Your Health and Lowering Your Cholesterol Naturally!" is an easy-to-read, easy-to-apply book of recommendations for natural cholesterol management. As a busy single mom with genetically high cholesterol, I've already been able to incorporate many of Brown's suggestions with minimal effort. A fun, healthy read! --Vicki Landes, author of "Europe for the Senses - A Photographic Journal"

There is a rampant buzz about lowering our cholesterol because it is considered a "silent killer" causing much concern in our society. This book will certainly give you information of why this buzz is rampant and why there are concerns.
Although it seems like Stuart Brown isn't in the medical field he does have good information for the average person interested in obtaining optimum health. As well, to substantiate his writing and direction Brown includes qualified research. He does not preach but gives facts. I was specifically interested in two areas in the book. One was the checklist of what to ask the doctor, and the other were the myths. The myths reminded me that just because the label says "light" it doesn't mean that it's not high in trans and saturated fats, or sometimes contain more fats than the "regular" foods. There isn't anything new or anything that hasn't been said before in this book, however, I do recommend it for those that don't want to do a whole lot of research to get to what they need to know. The concise manner in which Brown presents the information is palatable and gives us an opportunity to learn the basics. Once the basics are understood more research would certainly be in order if desired. |
