3.0 out of 5 stars Descent hot sauce, not for those who like a lot of heat.
I agree with the above reviewer that this sauce can be bland. I have to admit, I tried the sauce because of the neat looking bottle. It definitely adds some flavor, but those who are used to a more robust and flavorful hot sauce will probably be disappointed with this.

According to its makers, Cholula has been available in Mexico for three generations and imported to the U.S. for about 12 years. Named after a region of Mexico known for its ruins and ancient sites, Cholula is quickly becoming a hot sauce staple in the U.S. The bottle is a classic, with the yellow label, picture of a woman, and wood cap (the wood contains a plastic cap so that the sauce won't be contaminated).

The main ingredient of Cholula is the piquin pepper (also sometimes spelled "pequin"), which is a dried chile with the formal name "capsicum annuum." In terms of flavor, Cholula is definitely distinctive. The dried chiles add a slightly smoky essence with more dimension than Tabasco or similar hot sauces. The heat level is fairly moderate, which allows the sauce to season your food while not overwhelming it. However, the sauce sometimes seems a little watery or bland.

Cholula adds great flavor to a variety of foods, although I like it best on scrambled eggs; a plethora of recipes are available on the official website. With only 20mg of sodium per teaspoon, Cholula is one of the best sauces available for persons trying to avoid sodium. However, it may taste a bit plain to persons who enjoy a high salt content in their hot sauce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Vinegar Hot Sauce, October 29, 2006

This is not your grandfather's Tabasco. With all due respect to Tabasco, I've never liked the flavor of that hot sauce. Cholula is about the same level of heat, but with a better flavor.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best hot sauces, July 25, 2006

It's not terribly hot, but the flavor is probably the best I've ever found in a hot sauce. As another person said, it isn't heavy in the vinegar taste found in Tabasco sauce or other sauces. The only food I don't really use it in is that where I want a really high heat level (and for that purpose I'll usually use fresh peppers instead anyway).

If I had one suggestion, I would LOVE to see this company release a hot version (in addition to the current version). Piquin/Chiltepin peppers are actually some of the hottest out there, so the Cholula people are definitely using small quantities of it in the sauce. I wouldn't change the flavor at all, though, just up the pequin content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatile and not overpowering., July 1, 2011

(First of all, somebody is chasing me around and negging all my reviews so don't pay any
attention to that one NO vote.)

This is one of the best easily available hot sauces for regular people with normal tolerance
for spice.

Cholula uses a blend of arbol and piquin peppers. Piquin peppers are actually very spicy, so I'd
imagine that the amount of pepper per batch is fairly low, because this sauce has no spice at all
for Heat Freaks like me, but a decent little kick for regular civilians. I would compare the spice
to a low-level, mild kick, similar to a standard Tabasco sauce or vinegar/cayenne/arbol pepper
combination.

What it lacks in burning heat, it makes up for in solid flavor. Like basically all hot sauces, it
has a tangy vinegar base but contains a generous amount of spice for a robust, smokey tomato sort of
flavor. Piquin peppers are very flavorful in addition to being hot. I think they did an excellent job
of retaining flavor, even if they downplayed the spice.

If you live on the planet Earth, you're in luck. Cholula is available just about everywhere. I'd honestly
like to push for this sauce to become the go-to hot sauce instead of the less flavorful, just-as-spicy
Tabasco sauce. This sauce's wooden cap makes it stand out just a bit more than the standard hot sauces
gracing the shelves of grocery stores and bodegas. Can be found locally for under $3.

Good for pizza, salsas, chicken, steaks, sandwiches...with xanthan gum thickening this sauce, it works
really well as a strong alternative to ketchup or mustard without being like either one of those. Very
low heat rating so conditioned for most palates. If you are looking for flavor more than spice, this is
a great alternative to Louisiana style sauces. I highly recommend it! BTW, after rediscovering this great
sauce (after 20 years as a Tabasco snob) I have upgraded this review to .....5 Scovies

I can't rate this sauce highly enough. It's not especially hot, (if you're looking for something to sear your tongue with, may I recommend one of Dave's Insanity Sauces?) but has an incredible flavor. I'm nuts about pequin peppers, and this sauce has got 'em!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent hot sauce if you don't like tabasco, October 14, 2010
This review is from: Cholula Hot Sauce -- 5 fl oz (Health and Beauty)
I've never been much of a fan of traditional American-styled hot sauces like Tabasco or Trappeys, Sauce Hot Red Devil. I find them too vinegary and more sour than hot. Cholula is a bit different. It's still got that vinegary pep, but its not overpoweringly pungent. This sauce has different flavor and a nice kick that you can definitely feel, but it isn't a three alarm fire like habanero sauces. The heat is pleasant and fleeting, lasting for only a few seconds for me. It doesn't stay on the tongue and leave you hurting like some really hot pepper sauce I've had in the past. I put some in my home-made tom yum soup yesterday and it really brightened up the flavor. Moments after finishing it, I could feel sweat forming on my scalp. Goes great on all kinds of foods. Definitely worth trying.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST HOT SAUCE, August 30, 2010

Tapatio has nothing on Cholula. This sauce is awesome but I would not recommend buying it from Amazon. We usually get it from Costco which come in packs of two. Way better deal, I could consume a third of the big bottle in one sitting. The best!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fave on My Table, September 9, 2005
This review is from: Cholula Hot Sauce -- 5 fl oz (Health and Beauty)

I prefer the Mexican hot sauces, mainly Cholula and Tapa Tio, to Tabasco, which I find too vinegary. If you've never tried any of the Mexican sauces, Cholula would be a good start. It has an interesting blend of chiles you won't find anywhere else. And while it's definitely picante (which is kind of the point in a hot sauce) it's not hot enough to burn your tongue.

Also, it comes in a neat-looking bottle with a wooden stopper on top. Very classy when you put it out on the table for company to try.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good I drink it straight from the bottle, June 11, 2010

I bought Cholula Mexican Hot Sauce recently at a Mexican grocery store. I liked the neat wooden cap even though it seemed expensive when compared to Tabasco. But this sauce is full of flavor and it got that as I sat at my computer desk I started sipping it straight from the bottle just for a little bit of flavor in a dry mouth.

This stuff can be addictive, so I popped over here to Amazon to see if I could save money by buying it in bulk.

If you haven't tried it add some to your next Amazon order and see what you have been missing.

Now if someone can tell me what cholula means in Spanish?

Vic

This a great hot sauce. The spices are very well blended with no spice overpowering the others which sometimes gives other hot sauces an unplesant bite.
