Editorial Reviews

Review

Though one may differ with this interpretation of U.S. history, or his views on the downside of the global media, much of what this soft-spoken prophet says has a middle-of-the-night ring of truth. The possibility that Chomsky glimpses something the rest of us fail to see is the ultimate explanation for his place in the current intellectual pantheon.

This review is from: Chomsky on Democracy and Education (Social Theory, Education, and Cultural Change) (Paperback)
One of the two best books by Chomsky.

This collection spans a wide time range of Chomksy's writings and talks. The central theme as suggested by the title is education and its relation to democracy and lack thereof.

Chapters touch several subjects. The chapter on Chomsky's critique of postmodernism and his thoughts on the so called "science wars" is among his most interesting polemical stances.

His views on the responsibility of intellectuals, as well as his take on classical liberalism as he sees naturally leading to what he calls both "libertarian socialism" or "anarchism as advocated by bakunin" are classic.

This book gives a very good sense of Chomsky's ideological/philosophical position. If, in addition, you want to read Chomsky taking on various events, then get his "understanding power," where the style is often in q&a format.
