PreSchool-K–A book about all the ways for people on the go to get where they're going. Mayo includes race cars, trains, buses, planes, and even hot-air balloons. Each bright spread features a new vehicle and four lines about the sounds it makes and the way it moves. Flat illustrations loaded with primary colors and geometric shapes combined with a text full of "zooms" and "vrooms" beg for sharing aloud. Each verse concludes with a large "Off they go!" leading readers to turn the page and discover a new way to travel. On the last page, darkness falls and many of the vehicles are "resting" but a few will keep traveling until they are "home at last!" *Starred Review* PreS-K. Noise! Movement! Trains, boats, and planes! Little ones love motion, and this book brilliantly captures that rush in raucous words and eye-popping art. Each bold two-page spread begins in a similar fashion: "Airplanes are great at fly, fly, flying . . . race cars are great at race, race, racing," with the print size getting bigger and bolder to reflect movement. Short and snappy, four lines of text encapsulate the excitement that comes with getting in a car, sailing on a lake, or floating in a hot-air balloon. The graphic-style artwork is executed in a melange of pure colors. Yellow, red, orange, green, and blue can all be found on a motorcyclist's outfit; solid patches of hues make up the land below a soaring plane; a pink sky dotted with balls of white seems a perfect background for a family on a ski lift. I borrowed this book from the library because of the big train on the front. My son is a huge train lover (he also loves tractors). The book has a different type of vehicle featured on each two-page spread and lots of detail in the pictures to talk about with your child. (My son loves to point out the tractor in the field in the background on the airplane page :) It was a little difficult to read aloud the first time and the wording was kind of unusual (it took me until half way through the book to clue in that it was more of a poetry style than a regular story style of writing) Once I figured out the rhythm of the writing, it was easy to read to my son. I almost didn't read it to him because the wording seemed so wierd, but when I read it to him HE LOVED IT. He likes music and rhythms anyway and having the rhythm combined with vehicles delighted him. He keeps asking for it every day. I've renewed it once from the library and I think I'll just need to buy a copy of our own (which I only do for my son's favorite books because money is tight).

Of course, every boy would not be complete without a healthy interest in trains, planes and every moving things. Our son loves this book and says "Choo Choo" nearly every night, asking us to read this book.

This book is positively poetic. Each page focuses on a different vehicle with bright, bold illustrations and rhythmic phrases with repeated patterns that kids will find contageous. My son began "reading" the book to me after a few days of repeated reading and applying the first line of each phrase to his everyday life! ("Crayons are great for draw, draw, drawing!")
