FINALLY- A way to eat lots of food for life!,
By rshinn1@neo.rr.com (OHIO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Choose to Lose: A Food Lover's Guide to Permanent Weight Loss (Paperback)
DIETS DON'T WORK! I have been searching for some way to change my way of thinking about food. I woke up every day planning where and what I would eat. Food was my life. Now I really think about food differently! I actually see it as the FUEL needed to maintain my body. I always thought I ate "healthy". I loved meats, potatoes, veggies. Never ate desserts and couldn't figure out why I was fat. It never dawned on me that what I was putting on these foods mattered a lot!! I have learned to eat everything I did before, but in a healthier way. Some days I can barely get down all the food that is required! All I did was begin to become aware of FAT CALORIES. This is a life change plan. Thanks for changing my life.

Healthy eating for a lifetime!,

I lost 84 pounds in 13 months using this diet along with exercise. I have kept it off for more than 4 years without feeling deprived. Food is no longer the constant focus of my life but something I use to fuel my body. It's great advice and uses real food not bars and powders!

Finally an intelligent way to eat.,

Having been on every diet in the world,I finally came to my own conclusion that diets simply don't work. I was delighted to find that "Choose To Lose" not only agrees, but encourages you not to weigh yourself and simply eat generous amounts of good, whole, naturally low fat nutritious food. Since I threw my scale out and began following the basic guidelines of "Choose To Lose", I've lost weight, gained back my self-respect and have enormous energy with a steady stable mood throughout the day. Throw out all your diet books and choose to live right now!!

The LAST plan for perm. weight loss you'll ever need!!,

This book is AWESOME. It's not a "diet"- it's a way of life. It's completely right on and is written in such a friendly, easy-to-understand manner with charts & outlined boxes to help bring key points out. I NOW FINALLY understand that carbs. are the GOOD GUYS- Yes to pasta! Yes to baked potatoes! Yes to BREAD and rice and cereal!!! (minus the butter, sour cream, bacon bits and whole milk, of course!) I also learned that you should NEVER, EVER skip meals. You won't lose weight by doing so and, in fact, it takes you back a few steps because your body then begins to think you are starving on a mountaintop somewhere so it STORES UP energy and slows down metabolism; thus discouraging you and severely slowing down wgt loss. It amazes me that most of the dieting population still subscribes to the "no carbs" philosophy. How could you live the rest of your life without carbs?? You can't- and you don't have to. The reason for this thought process must be a lack of education. This book is NOT A QUICK FIX, but an educational tool. It not only educates you for life-- but dispells the great myth that breads, pastas and potatoes are bad for you. Complex carbohydrates to your every day life, health and weight loss are just as important to your body as drinking water every day is! If I had 3 thumbs- I'd give them all up for this book!!

Choose to lose,

I read this books years ago, and when I found out the book was revised I had to have it. This book teaches you how to make a healthy eatting change for life, or just to lose those unwanted pounds. It tells you the importance of why you should not avoid carbohydrates, and it is very easy because you choose what you eat to loose weight, as long as you dont exceed your daily calorie or fat intake per day. It also teaches you why on 1000 caloried diets dont work because your body think it s starving and you dont loose weight because of so few calories. You can also save up for splurges. I think the hardest part in following this diet is eatting more than I am use to, when most diets you hardly eat. If interested in a positive eatting change where you can eat what you want, lose weight, drop your cholesterol level, and make this change for life, this is the book for you, I just love it, and the new me, because of it. Thank you Ron & Nancy Goor M.D. and Katherine Boyd R.D. for writing and sharing this book.

I am a community health educator within a nonprofit health promotion organization. We utilize the Goor's Choose To Lose program as a cornerstone component in our cardiosvascular disease prevention campaign. The book provides a simple and logical understanding concerning diet and diet-related topics. As an instructor, I find the book and program very effective in educating people about the importance of proper eating habits and the effect of eating on weight and overall health. I tell my class participants that the program ensures success, the only question is their willingness and ability to follow the guidelines. Simply, put Choose To Lose works!

There are a lot of conflicting philosophy's regarding diet but I think that this book offers a way to think about eating in a way we can all live by. This book makes sense and it works! I've lost 10 pounds and I don't think I've had to make a MAJOR lifestyle change. Forget Fergie and her points, forget Jennie Craig and their pre-packaged meals...You can do it yourself and this book can show you the way.

...and the doctor said, "Everything looks great, but you need to lose some weight." It was time; at nearly-60, I was ready to give it a try, "But, doc, I need a good diet plan." "I've got a great one," he chirped, "get dressed and we'll talk about it." Ten minutes later I get the eat-less-and-exercise-more mantra. "No, seriously, doc, I want a plan you can recommend." He recommended this book. Five weeks into it and no more sharp inhale to close the trousers waistband. In fact, there's some slack that will require re-tailoring within the month if this keeps up. I feel way better. The exercise "regimen" is a half-hour walk a day. Folks who don't see me but every few weeks have begun to offer compliments. I'd give the Goors five stars if the total calorie and and fat calorie calculations reflected what is readily available in stores in 2010 instead of 1980-something. People who consume pre-packaged meals must be beside themselves trying to work out all of it. The blessing is, package labeling is way ahead of where it was when the book was written. I found myself making a lot of equivalence assumptions in the three weeks of active meal journaling. That said, the Goors' approach makes it quickly apparent what "little things" are tipping the daily balance and pushing you past the 20% daily plan: that pat of butter filling the English muffin's nooks and crannies, the almond butter smeared across the rice cake or (gasp) cracker. Really, all of this is pretty obvious if I'd had the discipline to read the labels and multiply grams of fat time 9 to calculate fat calories over the years. But, who knew? Not me, Mr. Yuppy college graduate of the 70s. I don't know if this book is a life-saver for me or not; I suspect it's a life-extender. This is so "old school," un-trendy, and retro you'll leaven those watercooler conversations about Pritiken, Weight Watchers, South Beach, and yadda yadda current fads with what will sound, suspiciously, like fuddy-duddy common sense.Choose to Lose: A Food Lover's Guide to Permanent Weight Loss

After living in a new setting a gained a lot of weight. After reading this book Iunderstand more things about me and about food and exercise that made a lot of sense. As a result of learning and following its sensible advise I have lots more than 10% of my weight and kept it off for more than a year. The authors make a lot of sense and it is not too difficult at all to gain a more healthy outlook and result. martin rosen
