Book Description

September 11, 2008
Of all animals, the cat alone attains to the contemplative life. He regards the wheel of existence from without, like the Buddha. Andrew Lang, 1844-1912One rainy morning, Kat Tansey was trying to make a very important decision-should she stay and fight her debilitating depression, or should she choose to end her life? Hamlet-like, she kept turning the matter around in her mind. The problem, as her Buddha master Maine Coon cat Poohbear Degoonacoon, explained, was that the mind she was using was her ordinary mind, not a good place to be when making a decision of irreversible magnitude."Before you make a choice you cannot undo, you need to understand the nature of your own mind," he said. "Whether you are a human or a cat, the same technique applies. You must learn to sit and meditate. And I happen to know more than a little bit about this," he observed, making a point of sitting down and tucking both paws under his chest in his best Buddha pose. And thus begins Kat's journey back to herself, a journey into her own consciousness-where she learns to unlock the secrets of Buddhist meditation and find inner peace.

About the Author

When Kat Tansey began writing Choosing to Be fifteen years ago, the world was not ready for a book about a successful business woman struck down by Chronic Fatigue Syndrome who became deeply depressed and asked her Buddha master cat to help her learn how to meditate and find the will to live.Live she did, and after fifteen years she has finished Choosing to Be - and now the world is ready for it. Now the world knows about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Depression remedies are touted nightly on television in very depressing commercials. Buddhist meditation and all things Buddha are so popular that the Los Angeles Times published an article about "Buddhamania." And as for talking to a Buddha Master cat, so many books about talking to God and other spiritual guides have been on bestseller lists that no one even bats an eye about a talking Buddha Master cat.Kat has always been an innovative thinker who perceived the world with a different lens, one that included concepts and connections most people did not see. After spending twenty years implementing change in organizations, she developed her own Change Model and wrote Winning the Change Game to help companies be more successful in getting people to embrace new systems and methods. However another change awaited Kat, and this one removed her from the world she had known for twenty years. This was the beginning of a very different life, one in which she had to learn to focus on being rather than doing. Thanks to her Buddha Master cat and her other guides and supporters, Kat emerged from this phase in her life with renewed energy. She even returned to the corporate world for several years, until she ultimately realized that her path was leading her elsewhere.Kat returned to her real love, the book that has become Choosing to Be. As she worked on the book, she began to see where it was leading her. Now, finally, she is ready to combine being and doing as she coaches people in how to master the art and spirit of change. More About the Author

Kat Tansey is an award-winning author and innovative educator who believes in the power of a well-told tale to teach while it entertains.

An inspirational teacher, Kat spent her early career training thousands of people and consulting with over fifty corporations to help them meet the challenges of change. Her first book, written as a novel, was Winning the Change Game. The book reflected on the lessons Kat learned from twenty years in the corporate world as a training and change management consultant, and featured Alexander Hamilton, who was instrumental in the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, as the change guru.

Kat's second book, Choosing to Be: Lessons in Living from a Feline Zen Master, is the story of her journey from deep depression to emotional wellness after she was struck down by Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in the early 90's. Choosing to Be has been awarded the Independent Publisher's Bronze Medal, and has been highly praised by people like Thom Hartmann, distinguished radio commentator and lifelong meditator, who said it is one of the best books on meditation he has ever read. The illustrious Findhorn Press in Scotland picked up the rights to Choosing to Be and released a new, 2nd edition in September 2010.

Empowering and promoting women has always been a significant part of Kat's journey, and she focuses that passion toward collecting the wisdom of midlife women. Her weekly talk show, Finding Magic in Midlife, allows her to interview and discuss in-depth, lessons learned from a wide variety of accomplished and well-known midlife women.

In early 2010, Kat collaborated with her good friend Dave Carpenter to produce the highly praised e-book, Prospering in 2010. They also created an exciting subscription series of webinars, Prospering in 2010: Embracing Change to Accelerate Success.

Kat has a BA in English from Mary Washington College in Virginia and an MBA from Pepperdine University in California. She lives in Ojai, California with her partner, Greg, and enjoys taking long walks where she develops dialogues for her new book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cat's Meow, September 27, 2008

Kat Tansey has written an absolutely delightful book. The story of how her two cats helped her battle back from severe physical and emotional problems is both captivating and heartwarming. And, the writing is superb. In a day and age where so much writing is only worthy of fast reads, the author's powerful writing had me savoring each and every sentence.

As well written as the book is, the underlying message is even better yet. Those of us who are driven to always be "doing," should heed the author's message to learn to "just be." Certainly not the first author with such a message. But, truly one of the most enjoyable books making that very important point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Wisdom on 4 Paws, December 19, 2008
This review is from: Choosing to Be: Lessons in Living from a Feline Zen Master (Paperback)
Kat Tansey's book, Choosing to Be, is brilliant! The author makes the principles of Buddhism and meditation accessible to everyone by using her cat, Poohbear, as the Zen master.

I have been adopted by many cats in my lifetime (yes, they do adopt you) and always believed in their wisdom and spirituality.

Poohbear, the cat, actually talks and takes the author, Kat Tansey, through her journey from the abyss of chronic fatigue and depression, to her ultimate triumph of rejoining the world.

The beauty of Choosing to Be is that you can give it to anyone, even people who are not into Buddhism and meditation. The stories are wrappers for deeper truths that everyone can relate to.

I loved Choosing to Be and I can't wait to buy the audio book read by Poohbear himself!

I don't normally write reviews, but this author receives special kudos for a book that is not only terribly insightful but is also a book that has tremendous healing potential for those among us who are depressed, healing from a chronic illness, or just trying to get along day to day in a stressful world. The photograph of the young coon cat watching (with great fascination) the water swirl down the bathtub will stay with me always. I am also a great cat lover and appreciate the author's divine connection to the essence of being, as demonstrated to us by these wonderful animals.
