Gr 6 Up--Each of these series entries discusses a career area in general and then specifies considerations in choosing that field. Individual jobs are described in subsequent chapters covering occupations such as waiter, bus driver, or police officer. An excellent balance of genders and ethnic backgrounds appears in both the writing and the good-quality, full-color and black-and-white photos. The "Questions to Ask Yourself" at the end of each chapter, the slim format, large print, and occasionally simplistic text give the books a hi/lo or juvenile look. For the most part, though, the writing itself is aimed at junior high and high school students. The mixed-audience appeal makes the purpose of this series difficult to pinpoint. Adrian A. Paradis's Opportunities in Transportation Careers (1988); James Stinchcomb's Opportunities in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Careers (1996); and Carol Caprione Chemelynski's Opportunities in Food Service Careers (1992, all VGM Career Horizons), as well as other entries in that series, are better choices for older teens. However, these unremarkable titles have currency on their side and would make acceptable additions where career books are in high demand.
