From Library Journal
Written by a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) and one of her patients, this bookpromotes the use of these professionals for maternity care. The text describes the training of CNMs, making a distinction between them and other types of midwives. It then outlines the course of a pregnancy to demonstrate how CNM care might differ from that of a physician. The book's strength lies in its lists. There are lists of questions: e.g., what to ask in choosing a CNM, what to ask when choosing a birth center, and what to ask in creating a birth plan. Also included are lists of midwife organizations, CNM educational programs, and additional readings. A nice addition to larger women's health collections and an optional purchase for smaller collections.

Studies show that midwife-assisted births are as safe or even safer than births with physicians--midwives have much lower C-section and complication rates and their services cost roughly half of those of obstetricians. Illustrates how certified nurse-midwives offer a more personal, holistic and comprehensive approach to birth and well-woman care than traditional OB/Gyn. Explains exactly what a midwife visit entails and outlines the midwife philosophy of highly personal, natural care. Covers hospital, birth centers and home birth options.
