If you own a computer and have the least interest in recording audio, you're all but obligated these days to know what a DAW is, what it does, and which one does it better than others.

This DVD will answer the neophyte's most important initial questions about which DAW to own and how to use it. The only caveat might be the cost for a product that is 50% informative and 50% promotional, since it appears to be co-sponsored by two giants in the industry: Alfred Music and Blue Microphones. Still, the production values are "solid" (if rather unimaginative and static)--alternating between black&white and color video, both in hi def, and employing a friendly conversational approach with as much objective and informative neutrality as possible. Whether you have a Mac with the included Garageband or some other, higher level Mac or PC software, they've got you covered, including the oft-referenced ProTools. Strangely, the video supplies few demonstrations that are likely to inspire anyone to run out and pick up a DAW. (Give me Ole Blue with a roomful of studio musicians conducted by Nelson Riddle any day--it's all in real time and performed by real "human" musicians--as non-artificial, even prehistoric, as the music gets. And still as good.)

If you envision yourself setting up a home studio and going beyond the mere basics (i.e. Garageband), this disc can be recommended, even though five bucks would be a better price. Be prepared for a lot of 'tech/gear talk," though nothing you're likely to refer to repeatedly. Like most purchasers of the DVD, I'll watch it once and then try to pass it on.
