Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

In this ever-changing world of technology, teachers and librarians must find the best resources that will assist 21st-century students and effectively teach them with engagement and empowerment. Choosing Web 2.0 Tools is the supreme resource to get the job done. It provides practical strategies and examples with terrific graphics and charts as well as reproducible work sheets that can be applied to classrooms or libraries. The inquiry process is addressed with realistic application and can be directly utilized in an instructional setting. The authors discuss eight specific topics, including the learning and literacy of 2.0 technologies, web searching, social bookmarking, managing and organizing information, content collaboration, media sharing, social networking, and digital mapping. The illustrations are appropriate as well as specific; the book is well organized and practical.Donna Marie Wagner, Harris County Public Library, Houston, TX

From Booklist

This title is full of practical advice and information on using Web 2.0 tools, with the emphasis on student learning through collaboration. Each chapter begins with essential questions and ends with lists of media resources and references. An exceptional chapter on Web searches features information on student behaviors and strategies for teaching searching. Two chapters, one on print content and one on multimedia, focus on collaboration and sharing. Numerous graphics include charts, sidebars, screen shots, and student handouts. It is obvious the authors have favorite applications for each tool, but if the reader prefers another, there is enough information provided. Step-by-step instructions are given for several, and suggested action steps are offered. A “Tool Chart” gives URLs for all the Web 2.0 tools that are discussed. A glossary and index (including figures and tables) complete this must-have for all school librarians. --Shelley Glantz

This is a wonderful overview volume for information on a variety of web 2.0 tools. Comparisons of similar tools, with varied features of each listed, is especially helpful. The use of the Stripling Model of Inquiry throughout the work was very effective in pulling everything together.

This book is awesome! It is great for getting real life examples of how students can use technology and not just for the "sake of using technology." Each chapter starts with a scenario of how a student might use technology in real life. If you're a high/middle school teacher or librarian I would recommend adding it to your collection of professional development.

This book is great for all teachers! I think it is so important that we relate to this generation of students (who are very visual and stimulated by media and technology) and this book really gives some great strategies and resources on using social media and the internet in your classroom effectively.
