What I Wish I Had Known, January 18, 2011
This review is from: Chopard Men's 16/8997 Miglia G Tris Watch (Watch)
My wife purchased this watch for me as a Christmas present. She had recently reentered the workforce and decided that it was time to use some of the money she was earning to trade in the old Seiko battery-powered watch that she had purchased for me more than 20 years ago before we were married. I was, of course, thrilled... It was an extravagance beyond comparison. I loved the look, the heft and the feel of the watch and could not wait to put it on. Because the watch is self winding, it is necessary that it be worn in order to run. So I gingerly put the watch on my wrist, rotated my wrist a few times and then set the watch (including the second hand) according to the US government official time found at [...]. Later that day, I checked the time and was a little disappointed to discover that the watch was running slowly... It had lost a couple of seconds. The next morning I checked back and found that it had lost still more time. While I realize that allowances must be made because this is a mechanical, self-winding watch, the lack of accuracy was simply something that I was not expecting in a watch costing $3500. It had never been necessary to adjust my Seiko unless it was for daylight savings changes or when I was traveling and had to change time zones (and it cost $3350 less than the Chopard). After discussing it with my wife, we decided to return the watch. Per the Amazon website, I carefully packaged the watch, took it to the US Postal Service, stood in line for 25 minutes, and then at a cost of around $30 (for insurance and postage)sent it back to Amazon. A few days later, it was returned to us with the explanation that because the watch had a scratch on the bezel and some dirt on the clasp, it would not be accepted for return. I carefully inspected the watch using a magnifying glass and was unable to find any scratches much less any dirt on the clasp.
I have used Amazon for many purchases in the past and probably will continue to use it for future purchases, but on a much more selective basis. This clearly is one of those situations in which my wife and I would have been much better served by purchasing the watch from a local jeweler even at the higher price that they required. We were attracted by the savings that we thought we would realize at Amazon. But, we were as the saying goes, "penny wise and pound foolish."
Amazon's guidance for writing product reviews is to focus on "What would you have wanted to know before you purchased the product?" For me, I would have liked to have known that Amazon would not accept watches for return, even those that could not keep the correct time. Obviously, each purchaser has to make up their own minds regarding the risk/reward associated with a sight unseen purchase which may not meet their expectations. Hopefully, your purchase will work out differently.
