5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing collection of Chopin transcriptions for quintet, February 7, 2002

This review is from: Chopin: Arrangements for Piano & String Quintet (Audio CD)
The title for this CD is deceptive -- there is only one string quartet in the collection; most are string quintet with piano, string quintet, or solo piano. If you like string quartets, as I do, you might be a bit disappointed to read this information on the cover of the CD. But then, like me, you would play the three CDs in this set and be entranced. Radziwonowicz plays with both firmness and delicacy, intimating that this is a master of these pieces. The quintet is a gentle backup, tamer than an orchestra and thus able to show off the piano so much better. Some tunes are exquisite -- Fantasia on Polish Themes, the Krakowiak Rondeau, the Preludes, and the two piano concertos. Radziwonowicz can be dynamic as well, but not startlingly so -- very nicely done are the Introduction and Polonaise in C and some of the waltzes/etudes. This is really fine piano playing minus any egotistical displays -- an excellent pianist. Blended in with the string quintet, you get some intense and subtle melodies. Highly recommended for a performance that is lively but sweet, tender but arousing -- surprisingly good when you consider that these musicians are not that well known in the US. A great collection with lots of variety, and note too that some of these transcriptions are arranged by the pianist's brother, a member of the quintet, for a personal touch that highlights the musicians' abilities very neatly. The sound is excellent, crisp and clear without distracting noises. These are the sort of CDs that you can happily listen to for hours and then replay again for several hours more. Lots of nuances, never boring, genuinely beautiful music. Oh, if only Chopin could hear . . .
