Editorial Reviews

Review

Chopin's four ballades are widely regarded as being among the most significant exetended works for solo piano of the nineteenth century. In an illuminating discussion, Jim Samson combines history and analysis to provide a comprehensive picture of these popular piano works, investigating the social and musical background to Chopin's music, evaluating the many printed editions of the ballades before considering their critical reception and the differing interpretations of well-known nineteenth- and twentieth-century pianists. -- Book Description

Nice book, but it's a bit disorganized towards the end. Also Samson doesn't go into as much detail for each ballade's analysis as I was expecting for a book solely on those four compositions. I used it for a class on Chopin's music and it worked, but again, I think there should be more analysis per ballade, both in theory and hermeneutics. In addition, it's a bit outdated, lacking much of the 21st century's new research and insight into Chopin's composition style.
