When he was younger, Barenboim showed signs he could become yet another Artur Schnabel or Wilhelm Kempff on the keyboard. His Deutsche Grammophon recording of Chopin's "Nocturnes" remains among his finest for the piano. His playing is delicate, beautiful and quite lyrical. Yet having heard Claudio Arrau's performances of Chopin's piano concertos and scherzos, I believe Barenboim's performances aren't nearly as graceful as Arrau's, or Moravec's; the latter is probably our foremost living interpreter of Chopin. Still, at this price, Barenboim's recording is worth acquiring.

Barenboim's recording of the Chopin Nocturnes is good, rather than outstanding. The recording is a reliable rendition which the listener will very much enjoy. However, for someone who is already familiar with recordings of the nocturnes, or of some outstanding individual recordings, this disk will be somewhat disappointing. The nocturnes are some of the deepest and expressive works in the romantic piano genre, for which there have been many phenomenal recordings. And as a collection of the whole set of nocturnes, there are better alternatives. I recommend the collection by Moravec, which in my opinion is the best available complete recording; another definitive recording is the one by Rubinstein in the 1930s. Compare, for example, the famous Opus 48 n.1 performed by Moravec, to that by Barenboim. One feels that Moravec is describing the most tragic moment in his life, and listening to it often brings me to tears. Barenboim, in comparison, sounds as if he is just playing the notes; I was not very moved. Expression and interpretation is so important to these works. So, while Barenboim sounds nice, there are much better alternatives. One advantage of Barenboim, however, is that it includes the posthumous nocturnes, whereas others do not.

Usually, I am a little bit cautious concerning performances of Daniel Barenboim both as a conductor and as a pianist. But I have to admit that this delicate, accurate, passionate recording of Chopin's Nocturnes has revised my skepticism to some extent. The variety of tunes and passions in Chopin's pieces is well reproduced - maybe occasionally I had hoped for a little more "sound".
The Nocturnes are - in my opinion - Chopin's most original and most personal pieces. The main challenge for a pianist is to uncover the rich structure hidden in apparent accompaniment and to unravel the beauty of the melody which often stretches out over many bars. Barenboim's interpretation exhibits these characteristics.
The DG recording is solid work, but this recording sounds really like a studio recording. Probably a better sound could be yielded if a room with better acoustics and an according piano was used. (OK, I am a fan of Boesendorfer pianos...)

I have always loved Chopin's nocturnes but it always seemed as though I had to listen "through" the music to arrive at Chopin's delicate and achingly beautiful melodies. Most performers' attempt to "play" Chopin always interfered with the music like a noisy overlayer. Barenboim presents the music. You get absorbed in the music and then suddenly realize that Barenboim stepped "behind" it and just "let it be."

I remember when I first came across these performances by Daniel Barenboim about ten years ago - being only vaguely aware of what Chopin's piano music was about in general, I did not quite know what to expect. The initial plunge into the world of these Nocturnes was filled with a sense of bafflement, as I could not grasp the long melodic curves and harmonic subtleties at all. Not that I'm any better now in analysing the structure or musical content of these pieces - I just could not see back then that this music needs to be felt rather than understood.
A somewhat romantic attitude, perhaps, but feeling is precisely the keyword when describing Barenboim's interpretation of these piano pieces. Throughout, his playing displays the kind of hushed or withdrawn quality that the music seems to call for, not drawing attention to the performer's admittedly virtuosic technical abilities, but allowing the pieces to breathe, to speak for themselves. Moreover, the close but soft-grained recording does full justice to the music's otherworldly qualities.
I hate to use the words 'soothing' and 'relaxing' in this context, but that is exactly what these performances are, though definitely not in the vacuous New Age sense. Such one-dimensional expectations may well be nipped in the bud by the occasionally disturbing, albeit subtle shifts in mood and tempo that these pieces convey to the attentive listener. Not even to mention the all-pervading, lanquid eroticism implied between the notes.
So, all in all, this is one of the most successful sets of Chopin's nocturnes available. The only snag is, of course, that halfway through you will have to get up and change the disc - not maybe a great physical feat in itself, but one that might break whatever spell you've just fallen into.
Unless, of course, you've been clever enough to purchase a multi-disc CD player.

I love listening to Chopin's Nocturnes and have been searching for the best rendition for years. Over the years, I've listened to and purchased many quality versions of these Nocturnes (Pollini, Yundi, Moravec, Rubinstein, Ohlsson, Ashkenazy, Arrau, Pires, et al.) They are all very enjoyable, but there is something special about these recordings by Barenboim - flawless, smooth and very soothing. I enjoy Barenboim's recording the most, followed by Pollini and then Yundi.
