Biography

About Venezuelan-American pianist Vanessa Perez, The Washington Post called it right, saying, “Vanessa Perez is not to be taken lightly.” The newspaper’s critic added: “She stormed through some beautiful works at the Venezuelan Embassy, her fiery impetuosity proving her technical prowess in works by Villa-Lobos, Albéniz, Ravel and Rachmaninoff. . . Vanessa Perez has masterfully rendered every piece.

In the Barcarolle, she builds from the lovely opening to build waves of momentum that create a heroic element to the work.

Vanessa Perez is a rare breed of pianist - a sensitive and passionate player that lights up the keyboard whenever appropriate. The perfect example of this is the contrast between the incredibly moving 15th Prelude (the Raindrop) and the 16th Prelude. In the Raindrop, her playing ranges from tender to deep to even quite intense. Just after, Miss Perez launches a thunderous run through one of the most exciting moment of the Preludes. Overall, her approach to the Preludes is illuminating - almost like a chameleon that changes colors to fit in with its changing environment. The additional Preludes, rarely played, are quite a delight. She makes a compelling argument that the works ought to be performed more often.

Yet there is so much more to the CD, with the Barcarolle and Fantasy also on the program. Any pianist that can play the Preludes, Barcarolle, and Fantasy this well is a superb pianist. The works demand so many different types of qualities from the musician. In the Barcarolle, she builds from the lovely opening to build waves of momentum that create a heroic element to the work. Meanwhile, her Chopin Fantasy possesses all of the drama and excitement necessary to showcase this fiery woprk, easily one of Chopin's lengthiest single movement solo works.

The sound on the recording is excellent, and the piano sound is perfectly suited to the repertoire.

By now, I do confront the hoopla of any label's promotion machinery with skepticism. This was not an exception, but still, my hopes were always very high in believing that this might be THE performance of a lifetime. That, of course, is a very high bar to reach, even considering that Rubinstein (my favorite "chopinian") never recorded this cycle, and Richter selected only a few.
The Preludes are my favorite Chopin's PIECE. I state it in the singular because, for me, it is a journey, a big musical arch that flows from one key to another, from one mood to the next, with motion, ease and magnificence. No question that you can play certain pieces separately (that exquisite No.4 in E minor or No.15 the `Raindrop'), even build a wonderful song over No.20 in C minor (as Barry Manilow and Donna Summer demonstrated in the 1970s). But the best experience is listening to them from 1 to 24, non stop.
Vanessa Perez is another beautiful (of course: she's from Venezuela!) pianist with superb technique. As per the attached video interview, she also seems to be a sensitive, noble human being (a combination that I, as a man, would love to see in my neck of the woods!) I will truly keep an eye on her new recordings. But she's not there yet. What this seems to lack is poetry, that in-between-the-lines (notes) magic from some past performances. The preludes that require an amazing technique are dispatched with ease and awe, but, by the end of the journey, I felt that indescribable magic missing. I am certainly spoiled by dozens of past pianists, no doubt. I suspect age and life experience (the pianist's, that is) do help.

Vanessa Perez is a Venezuelan pianist with a credible music bio and a consistent marketing campaign of photos portraying her as some kind of sensuous keyboard diva. I guess the hope is that men will buy her albums for TWO reasons. This is all-too-common in the popular music business and, for at least the last decade or more, in the classical world, as well. For serious musicians and music lovers, this is really unnecessary but worse, it is an offensive objectification of women. If the labels did the same with male artists, I guess we would see the equivalent of Joe Namath modeling hose like in the 1950's or 60's! Okay, okay. I'll get off of the soap box and do a serious review of Perez's performances of the Chopin Preludes on the late-great-and-risen-like-the-Phoenix Telarc label. The recording date is unspecified, but the album was released in 2012.

Perez's interpretations of the Preludes are generally excellent and at times superb. There are a small few, however, that are quite unsuccessful, such as No. 1 in C major. Perez's ability to make sudden dynamic shifts at the end of each brief phrase is technically impressive but completely unmusical to the point of destroying the flow. At the other end of the spectrum, No. 3 in G major demonstrates both her technical and musical prowess. No. 4 in E minor is superb and generally unmannered, but I think it could use a more delicate touch that I know she is certainly capable of. No. 6 in B minor, one of my favorites, would have been sublime with a softer touch. No. 7 is rushed, while No. 8 is heavy-handed. No. 9 in E minor is very-well done. No. 10 in C-sharp minor, No. 12 in G-sharp minor, No. 13 in F-sharp major, and No. 15 in D-flat major are superbly performed with clear vision and feeling.
