If you are interested in Chopin's methods, get this book!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Chopin: Pianist and Teacher: As Seen by his Pupils (Paperback)
This book gives a clear idea of Chopin's philosophy and practice of the pianoforte. Whereas most biographies are cluttered with florid descriptions of his salon and will tell you nothing about his music, this book is well-researched and richly annotated. A surprisingly good read and definitely a great reference!

Indispensible to anyone interested in Chopin,
By Andrew HO (Hong Kong) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chopin: Pianist and Teacher: As Seen by his Pupils (Paperback)
When I went to university, I devoured almost all books on Chopin from the library. None was nearly as informative. Through his pupils, friends, associates, colleagues, you'll know exactly what the master was like when he played and taught, his stylistic requirements, his temperament and the magic he evoked.I just can't stress this enough - this is a must-buy! If you still have your doubts, get your hands on a copy and have a browse - what you can learn from it is priceless.

A must for Chopin fans,

This review is from: Chopin: Pianist and Teacher: As Seen by his Pupils (Paperback)
This is an excellent and well documented work. Anyone who tries to play Chopin or has an amibition to do so, should read this. It goes straight to the heart of Chopins entire musical philisophy, and gives not only insight into the artist himself, but solid and sound advice on practicing, technique, and interpretation. Strongly recommended.

Must have for anyone seriously studying Chopin,
By Antonia Brentano (Leiden, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chopin: Pianist and Teacher: As Seen by his Pupils (Paperback)
To the general public Chopin is famous for his beautiful piano music. However, in his days he also was a renowned piano teacher with some revolutionary ideas (at least for his time) about piano technique. His students included rich, aristocratic ladies (he had to make a living) and some very talented students.
Luckily many of the things Chopin told his students during their lessons have been preserved in various diaries and notes by his students and have now been compiled in this book. Also, Chopin made a start with a piano method (which he did not complete). This method is also included in this book. If you are a piano student this book is simply a must-have. If you are not a pianist, but seriously interested in Chopin's ideas about (his own) music and teaching you also should buy this book. JJ Eigeldinger wrote more excellent books about Chopin which unfortunately are still only available in French.

A Great Historical Document,
By A Customer
This review is from: Chopin: Pianist and Teacher: As Seen by his Pupils (Paperback)
This book is wonderful for understanding Chopin's philosophies on technique and musicianship. One important thing you learn in reading this book, however, is that the piano has changed dramatically since Chopin's time. My main reason for reading this book was to gain valuable information about how to improve my technique for playing Chopin. Although I definitely learned a lot by reading this book, the issues relating to Chopin's advice about technique are unfortunately not as relevant on pianos today as I was hoping. In short, it's a great read, but will not solve all your Chopin technique problems.

great book on how to play Chopin,
By Erica Ford (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chopin: Pianist and Teacher: As Seen by his Pupils (Paperback)
For those of us who bungle at the keyboard and can always use more guidance, this book offers a great start in understanding Chopin's music. Probably the most difficult piece to play in public is Chopin Ballade No. 4, and Chopin offers some incredible insight into how he wanted it played. As you know, the music notation on the sheet cannot cover every intention of the composer, much like writing cannot capture everything, but most of what we want to say. This book supplements your understanding of the music. I would not be surprised if your great piano teacher pulls material out of this book in order to advise you on how to play Chopin.

You need this if you play Chopin,
This review is from: Chopin: Pianist and Teacher: As Seen by his Pupils (Paperback)
You need this book if you play Chopin. There is a wealth of information on playing Chopin's music directly from the composer and his pupils. It has answered many questions and cleared up some misconceptions I had about this music.

Lessons with Chopin,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chopin: Pianist and Teacher: As Seen by his Pupils (Paperback)
What can be better than taking lessons with Chopin? This book is very objective. The sources were his students' letters and the chapters are very well-organised.
The higher the level you are in playing piano/music, the more you get.

The last Thursday August 17, I mean three days ago, I received in quality of gift of an admired colleague who has in common with me, the love for music and literature -Mario Flores- this splendid bio about Chopin. Kleczynski undertook a sincere, exciting and well detailed information about Chopin, the musician, the man and the artist he was. Concise, descriptive andpoetically written, this book will lead us through the life and times of Fredric Chopin the most admirable poet of the musical Romanticism. Acquire it and try to send it as a gift especially in this bicentennial year of this unforgettable genius of the music.

Chopin as piano teacher,
By
This review is from: Chopin: Pianist and Teacher: As Seen by his Pupils (Paperback)
Very good and comprehensive analysis of Chopin as a pianist and as a piano teacher, I learnt a great deal that I had not known previously about Chopin's piano technique and his virtuosity. More than that though it was very informative about piano playing and teaching in the Romantic era. It appears to have been very well translated by Naomi SHOHET.
Well worth buying and reading. Nigel Jackson |
