Worthy,
This review is from: Chopin & Rachmaninov: Cello Sonatas (Audio CD)
Before buying this disc, you should be aware that there is a technical glitch in the slow movement of the Rachmaninoff Sonata. For a few seconds, a second cello apppears to be playing in the right channel. If you can overlook this, there is much to enjoy in this CD. This is probably the best performance of the Rachmaninoff Sonata that I have ever heard. Kniazev plays with a wonderful Slavic feeling, and his conception is both lyrical and dramatic. He also plays the Vocalise with restraint and elegance. Throughout the album, Lugansky's playing is stunning. He commands a lovely tone, and his phrasing is down to a filigree of beautiful patterns. The reason I have not given this disc five stars, aside from the technical glitch, is that Kniazev is less at home in the Chopin than in the Rachmaninoff. His phrasing seems uncertain at times, and his tone is less than full bodied. The sound engineering, from The Maltings, Snape, is less full that one usually hears from this locale, although the balance between the instruments is good. So this is a disc with problems, but with much to enjoy.
