In a busy harbor, in the faraway island of Hong Kong, there is a floating restaurant. This restaurant is home to Chopsticks, a tiny gray mouse. Chopsticks befriends a wooden dragon who wants to fly. On the night of the full moon, during Chinese New Year, they share a high-flying adventure with the help of Old Fu, the dragon’s creator.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3–In Hong Kong, there is a floating restaurant that a mouse calls home. One New Year's night, after it has closed, a wooden dragon that is coiled around one of the large pillars in the entrance tells him of his wish to fly, but that only Old Fu, the carver, knows how to bring him to life. Chopsticks goes to the elderly man to learn his secret and returns to release the dragon. They fly into the night sky, and continue to do so every time the moon is full. The text is somewhat trite compared to the fabulous artwork. The vividly painted pictures appear to be acrylic based and provide colorful and enchanting backdrops for the story. The scenes are so intriguing that they will have readers lingering on each page to enjoy the details.–Amanda Conover Le, St. Johns County Public Library System, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

From Booklist

Gr. 2-4. Chopsticks, a small gray mouse, lives in a Hong Kong restaurant in the shadow of two enormous, carved wooden dragons. One dragon longs to see the world and asks Chopsticks to consult Fu, the old carver, whose magic frees the dragon. Together, the friends travel the world at every full moon. Large, lush paintings depict an appealing, nonthreatening dragon, richly evoked Hong Kong landscapes, and dreamlike evening travels. Like James Daugherty's Andy and the Lion (1989), Chopsticks demonstrates the symbiotic benefits of cooperation in a charming story with an Asian flavor. Linda Perkins

More About the Author

Jon Berkeley was born in Dublin at a time when there were no bootprints on the moon. He was educated by stern men with elbow patches, in a school where you were allowed go to the bathroom only if you asked in Irish.

At the age of two he picked up a pencil and began to draw. He drew dragons, giants, oddballs, castles, car races and lost aliens. He drew everything, in fact, except horses. Their back legs go funny in the middle, he says, and he still gives them a miss whenever he can.

Jon has worked for over twenty five years as a freelance illustrator, cartoonist and occasional columnist in Sydney, Hong Kong, London and Dublin, and now lives in a small town near Barcelona with his wife, Orna, and their five children, along with nine cats (at the last count) and two vintage dogs.

He illustrates for Time magazine, The Sunday Times, Newsweek and The Economist among many others, and writes when he's not illustrating. He wrote and illustrated CHOPSTICKS, the story of a friendship between a mouse and a dragon.

Jon is the author of THE WEDNESDAY TALES, a series of three books about a boy who lives in a barrel, a four-hundred-year-old girl with wings, a blind explorer and a talking tiger.

The first book of his new series, BELL HOOT FABLES, was released in Februrary 2010. It's called The Hidden Boy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A delicacy served up with Chopsticks, February 24, 2007
This review is from: Chopsticks (Hardcover)
A tiny mouse befriends a wooden dragon in this simple story that takes place on the Chinese New Year in Hong Kong Harbor. Anything is possible, and thanks to Berkeley's atmospheric description, it's easy for a child to suspend disbelief.

He paints whole scenes in a few lines of prose, so we're right down there with little Chopsticks, the mouse, as he scurries late at night in search of crumbs on the floor of a floating restaurant. It's an impressive place, with hundreds of windows and two enormous carved dragons guarding its mammoth entrance.

We might even tremble in empathy too when, one New Year's night, one of the dragons clears his throat and asks Chopsticks to draw near. Turns out he wants to confide his secret longing to Chopstick, and a friendship is born.

Berkeley's Hong Kong Harbor is a misty dreamscape, where an old carver in his sampam holds the secret to granting the dragon's wish. The dragon's a friendly sort, with big, cheerful eyes and a lopsided grin, and, like Chopstick, you instantly want to help him out.

His acrylics glow with filtered sunlight and streaks of gold radiate from gleaming surfaces. We're keenly aware of Chopstick's diminutive size amidst the bustle of the world's busiest harbor, but we never lose sight of the little fella' as he sets out to help his new buddy.

This is a perfect one for teaching about friendship, about good deeds, and about bringing your own sense of adventure to all you do.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the top of my favorites list, February 7, 2010
This review is from: Chopsticks (Hardcover)
As other reviewers have said, the illustrations in this book are lush and really beautiful, and the mouse is really charming. I've read many books to my daughter over the last 5 years and this is one of my very favorite books (tied with Anatole). The one thing I'd add is that there is a really nice touch at the end where Chopsticks goes back regularly to the old man who carved the dragon to tell him about his adventures with the dragon. To me it's a subtle message of respect for the elderly and the mouse's thoughtfulness and willingness to think of a way to make someone else happy, not just himself.
