2.0 out of 5 stars Too Difficult and Unclear, November 17, 2004

This review is from: Chord Solo Guitar Volume 2 (DVD)
John Carlini plays beautifully--but he's not much of a teacher. The songs are frequently interrupted with his comments that, personally, I felt provided insights about playing, but didn't help much with the mechanics of learning.

Carlini assumes you already know most?...all? of the chords all the way up the fretboard, can transpose songs to another key ("a good practice") and generally don't need systematic instruction.

The skill level/knowledge required isn't clear on the blurb for the DVD. Another -major- problem for me was that the DVD also had terrible supplemental materials. The sheet music for the 5 songs is folded up, loose, inside the case--difficult to use, easy to lose. Worst of all, although the sheet music -does- include tablature, the tablature notations are inexplicably so tiny and so faint that they are virtually unreadable.

Carlini's demonstrations and commentary may be very beneficial for advanced guitarists, not those at an intermediate level. But he should make it clearer what level this DVD is made for--and that the included sheet music is not designed for those who rely on tablature.
