4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but a bit uneven
Excellent songs like "Dead Opera Star" and "Midget in a Junkyard" make you realise that some of the other songs are a bit more 'throwaway' and not as well developed. But hey, it's an EP of non-LP songs. Thats what you should expect. Necessary for the hardcore Sparklehorse fan. Others can probably get by with their two full length CD's.

2 1/2

Tiny EP has a few decent songs and a few disposals, nothing that really appealing for non-hardcore devotees to discover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, vastly creative, quietlymoving and brilliant., June 29, 1998

I can't say enough good things about this album. Unfortunately, it appears that Sparklehorse (aka Mark Linkous sp?) was dropped from Capitol or is at least on a long hiatus. Nevertheless, this album is so rich in emotion, passion, and textures that it holds up over years on its own. This is deeply personal music but not in the sometimes annoying and all-the-time cliched singer/songwriter confessional style of Countings Crows et al. This absolutely is NOT lo-fi. Rock critics are generally very ignorant of how music is made and calling thi slo-fi is no exception. Make no mistake, I liken his studio talents and ingenuity on the level of a Trent Reznor or Roger Waters. The couple heavy numbers are a bit of an anachronism but ultimately, the contrast just adds more power to the quiet fury of the rest of the album. This is meant only for cold, rainy, November nights spent alone when it feels like the world has let you down once again. You will know it's all ok and you are not alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quiet journey along the borders of Linkous land, July 13, 1998

As wonderful as the album-'viviedixiesubmarinetransmissionplot',this e.p. is a taster of the shadowy sunny skies of Linkous' world. We can all confide in this mans masterful work and lay back in the arms of this frankly stunning music. The last two tracks alone are enough to make one cry and scream at the same time...amazing... ...BUT WHERE'S LINKOUS GONE TO ?!?!?-WE WANT MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart of Darkness Revealed, November 15, 2001

Linkous' trashy EP opens up the veins of the swirling 'shiny car' of the forlorn genius. The core of dirty carpet, an overplayed but worshipped guitar, and a mind filled with magic, chaos, and a need for experimentation. Recommended to anyone who enjoys minimalism and voices that can only scream when alone.
