Very helpful!, November 18, 2008
This is the most helpful basic choreography book I've found and just terrific for choreographing a community theater musical. Despite extensive dance training many years ago, I felt unequal to the task of designing big production numbers as well as smaller dances required for my current production, and purchased a number of books as resources. This is one of, if not the best.
The authors' diagrams and analyses of spacing, symmetry, staging, and using props and furniture to disguise less-skilled dancers are just great. It's an excellent refresher course in show dancing, and contains wonderful diagrams demonstrating what will work, what won't, and why. With this book in hand, I'm choreographing up a storm, and feel much more confident that I'm creating dances that are easy on the dancers and interesting for the audience.
Choreographing the Stage Musical is probably not for someone who's had absolutely no dance training, but for someone who's had moderate dance or stage experience, it's be a great tool. How unfortunate that it's so hard to obtain, but how glad I am I did!
