More About the Author

Taaj started teaching belly dance seriously in 2001. From 2002 to 2007 her students won 46 trophies from competitions in 4 states. In 2007, Taaj took the knowledge gained from coaching those students and turned it into the Belly Dance Trainer Certification Program so that she could share her award-winning techniques with others. Taaj's students are now producing award-winning students of their own. Dancers in 8 countries and 26 US states are studying the program. Beyond Moves, Combos and Choreography is Taaj's latest teaching tool to help share her success and reputation of excellence.

Be sure to also check out Taaj's instructional DVD, Belly Dance Basics.

I purchased this book because I wanted new ideas on teaching concepts -- beyond just how to move -- in my bellydance classes. What I received was an absolute treasure trove of ideas, games, exercises, things to look out for, new ways to describe concepts, and even coverage of concepts that I had never thought to include in my classes. I am so pleased with this book!

Broken down into "concepts," each section focuses on a different activity to get your students thinking about things like dynamics, emotionality, and musical interpretation. From exercises on level changes to smoothing transitions, from layering movements to teaching students how to hear the beat -- this book covers it all, and the exercises are infinitely customizable. Although the book is geared towards activities for beginner to intermediate students, you could easily adapt the exercises for a more advanced class. The advanced dancer can also adapt the exercises for her own home-study.

This is real 110+ page BOOK -- NOT a pamphlet. It's an oversized paperback, with no fluff or wasted space. The book does not describe or break down any movements. It's assumed that if you're teaching bellydance you will already know the movements. This book strictly deals with teaching concepts, not moves. I especially love the little checklist/test for each activity, with notes on what to look for to see if students understand the material. This book is a MUST for any bellydance teacher.

Taaj has outdone herself on this book right down to the fabulous book cover. This book is an excellant resource for teachers and students.
It is well written and easy to understand, I like how it covers exercises for beginner to advanced and can't wait to use some of them myself.

As a teachers handbook this is great. It gives you lesson ideas, & makes you aware of what a professional Belly Dancer should be able to do. However most Belly Dancers do not take the "exams" that are in the book. Most of us like to do this for fun; so the "Games" I found more interesting. As a Instructor it is hard to get the troupe to understand or do moves that are a little difficult & make them flow. The games made it fun! Movements became easy.
There are no pictures in this book-it is a Teaching Text Book.

What a delight this new book from Taaj, "Beyond Moves," is! And what a treasure for all teachers of the beautiful art of Oriental dance (belly dance). I heartily endorse and recommend this book for all belly dance teachers, as a way of adding both depth and enrichment to their classes - along with a big dose of fun!

I've been teaching Oriental dance for over twenty years. In this time, I've "studied with the best," and developed lesson plans and detailed curricula based on what I've learned from others and developed on my own. Also, I have a long professional history of teaching different courses, in diverse fields, at the university level. Thus, developing syllabi and lesson plans is familiar and comfortable ground for me. This book by Taaj impresses me with its thoroughness, usefulness, and versatility. It is one that I will use extensively as I develop new lesson plans and refine existing ones. Further, I'll recommend it to all who study with me with the intention of becoming teachers themselves.

In addition to being useful for teachers of Oriental dance, this book also has great value to those teaching any form of lyrical dance or improvisational movement. The concepts that Taaj presents are well-known to all dancers, and extend beyond the boundaries of a particular style. For example, the notions of changing direction, dynamics, and level are important to everyone developing a choreography. The concepts - and methods - for using posture and alignment, expressing mood, and storytelling are important to anyone involved in stagecraft. The idea of playing with the "quality of movement" is important not only in the performing arts, but for those using dance or interpretive movement as a therapeutic or personal growth experience.

I've been teaching for over ten years and I wanted this book as a gift for a dancer/instructor friend for Christmas. I thought I'd get one for myself as well. When it arrived, I thought by the packaging that it was just one book and the other would be shipped separately. I was surprised to open the package and find that both books were inside. The ideas and lessons have given me some more to think about and expand on my experience, but it's a little too basic for my experience. I do love how Taaj breaks down the lessons and explains step by step how to implement the ideas for students. I'm very happy I got a copy for myself, but still feel the price was a little too steep. At the very least it has inspired me to be a better teacher and more prepared and for that I am so grateful for the book.

I think games are sooo important for teaching belly dance. Especially for Americans because it seems like people are very used to and comfortable with the idea of a dance FITNESS class but when it comes to dancing for pleasure or art they feel very intimidated. People often join my class expecting a step aerobic or Zumba type class and I can see them have minor panic attacks when I speak in terms of performing or "feeling the music". I like to get them away from the mirrors and participate in games that employ the concepts of dynamics and enhance their musiciality skills. It is so nice to learn some new ways to do this so that class can always be fresh and challenging for long term loyal students as well as beginners. This book has challenges for beginners, intermediate, & advanced dancers so that they can work at becoming more creative and confident dancers. Getting students to play is crucile to their ability to absorb information. Students get a much more beneficial overall experience because in playing together, they form more intimate friendships with each other, overcome social fears, and have an easier time remembering what they learned- class becomes a transformative, supportive environment for growth on emotional and physical levels. My favorite part about this book is that I really felt like it had even more games than the ones listed because it very often inspired me to come up with original games we could play that weren't even in the book... it got me thinking about OTHER ways that information could be communicated or understood, inventing my own games. So this is a very valuable resource for teachers.
