Review

“...a compelling combination of mythology and paranormal elements...” (RT Book Reviews - praise for CHOSEN)

From the Back Cover

She was a Dark Breed—half Vampyre, half Lychen. Now she is chosen . . .

Kyana is the new Goddess of the Hunt, chosen for her determination to survive as much as for her passion to protect those she loves. Now, just when she’s finally ready to shed her past and let the one man who really matters into her heart, an evil has resurrected, and only Kyana stands in its way.

But Ryker, as the new Zeus, will not let her fight alone. It has taken him too long to convince Kyana they belong together for him to lose her. And if it means descending into the depths of Hades to make the ultimate sacrifice, then so be it. The fate of the world is at stake, and for Kyana and Ryker, no fight has ever been more personal.

Customer Reviews

Kyana is no longer in the midst of battle, but the one giving orders.

The main conflict was wrapped up, but I feel that there is more story to tell.

I just don't feel like the series ended with the same feel in which it began.

An ancient evil has returned and he has his tyrannical sights set on ruling all. Kyana may no longer be half vampyre, half lychen but the new Goddess of the Hunt is still a warrior and is prepared to fight. At her side is Ryker, the new Zeus, and together with their allies they battle for the freedom of all races.

I was not a fan of Kyana's at the start of the series. With the exception of her best friend Haven, she only cared about the glory she got from completing missions for The Order of Ancients. There was a lot of hate built up towards humans because of what happened before she was turned and she erected this wall around herself to keep everyone out. In the previous book you start to see changes but in Chosen, Kyana grows into this character I've come to adore. She's allowing people in, not jumping the gun, and actually being reasonable. In this book we see and feel the pain and emotional turmoil of her past. All this has made her less cold and brash and more caring and tolerant while keeping a lot of her badass side. A far more enjoyable heroine than the one we first meet at the start of things.

Ryker manages to be even more fabulous. Things were not always perfect between them in the past but now he's sticking by Kyana while giving her space to be herself. He sees the change in her and respects and trusts her to make decisions that will affect all of Olympus. He allows her the freedom she craves while standing his ground and not letting things backslide in their relationship. It takes a strong and understanding man to be with someone like Kyana and Ryker is that and so much more.

Cronos has returned to once again take his place on the throne of Olympus and he has no qualms with fighting dirty.

Apparently this is the third and final book in the Dark Breeds series. Many of the problems found solutions, but there were also some loose ends that were not tied up in my opinion. The biggest shocker Chosen gave me was Ares. I really started liking his character towards the end of Bedeviled. I loved him in Chosen. He finally fit into the role as a father. He also had an interesting evening with Kyana that I found very entertaining.

Cronos is beyond evil and he does not pull any punches in his pursuit to see his revenge achieved. He wants his sons to pay for his death. He wants Kyana and Haven to pay for getting in his way. He is willing to do anything and everything to get what he wants. He is ruthless in his pursuit of his only goal.

I am used to characters evolving as a series progresses. I think Kyana devolved. There were so many things I loved about her in Ascension. She was full of badassery. As her goddess powers took over she became tremendously committed to her new role as the Goddess of the Hunt. She softened in many ways. The softening allowed her to finally open her heart fully to Ryker, that was a good thing, but she also weakened her in many circumstances to me.
I think this series would be highly enjoyed by fantasy fans who want minimal sexual romance in the books they read.

I have now finished the "Dark Breed" series and I must say, I hated it to come to an end and can only hope that "Sable Grace" will continue with the heroine, Kayana Aslan. I have come to thoroughly enjoy the characters in the novels and from start to finish, have found them to be enjoyable page turners!!

Beware!! It's a bumpy-spoiler-filled road ahead!

Chosen picks up about six weeks after Bedeviled left off. Kyana is getting used to sharing her temple and her bed with Ryker, both of whom have their full god powers now. Haven is being kept in the healing circle to finish her cleansing.

Kyana wakes from a horrible dream to find the ghost of Haven's twin sister, Hope, staring at her. She warns Kyana that `he' is coming and that they must hurry. Ryker (who also sees Hope) and Kyana rush off to check on Haven. They get her out of the building right before it implodes, burying some inside.

Haven tells Kyana that she is feeling Cronos and that she is having strong dreams of him. So they visit Morpheus, the God of Dreams, so that Kyana can connect to Haven's dreams. What they see is shocking. Cronos is digging up graves to bring the deceased back to life and build his army. It's even more terrifying once they realize that it's happening in real life, not just in Haven's dreams.

Cronos is back and has one thing on his mind; destroy Olympus and all its inhabitants so that he can rule all three realms. Now the gods must band together to destroy this threat, but it won't be an easy battle and lives will be lost. Do Ryker and Kyana have what it takes to survive?

I have read all three of the Dark Breed novels back-to-back, and I have to admit that I've gotten pretty bored with the storyline. Here, we are at book three and we're still facing the same problem; Cronos. It just doesn't seem much has changed between each book and the whole thing is getting pretty tired and dull.

I did, however, enjoy the more personal scenes.
