Book Description

November 10, 1999
This family memoir from Joshua Hammer, Newsweek's Los Angeles Bureau Chief, is the story of an unfolding relationship between brothers. It tells of Josh's younger brother, Tony, a troubled teenager who traveled to Israel to work on a kibbutz and fell in with an ultra-orthodox Jewish sect. His journey ultimately led him to an arranged marriage and a cloistered life studying the Torah in a closed Hasidic community in upstate New York. As Tony's fundamentalist fervor and hostility toward the secular world deepened, so did his estrangement from his family, including his older brother.

In 1997, after five years as a Newsweek foreign correspondent, Josh returned to America and attempted to reconnect with his brother, who was now known as Tuyve. At first Josh could not understand his brother's choice to reject everything he had grown up with, but a reporter's skepticism was gradually tempered by a brother's love. It is this odyssey, punctuated both by the investigative instincts of a journalist and a man's desire to reconcile with the brother he just doesn't understand, that is superbly, movingly recounted here.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

What happens when two brothers' paths deviate because one becomes a religious fundamentalist? This question is sensitively explored in this absorbing and deeply felt memoir. Hammer is a successful journalist, having written articles for several national magazines and served as foreign correspondent and Los Angeles Bureau Chief for Newsweek. In this, his first book, his journalistic experience is evidenced by a well-written, accessible account and easy-to-read prose. Hammer focuses on his relationship with his younger brother, Tony (now called Tuvia, "the Blessed One of God"), four years his junior. Originally a liberal Jew, Tony was involved in politics as a youth and aspired to an acting career. On a trip to Israel, he became attracted to a Hasidic yeshiva, and on his return sought out a counterpart in Monsey, N.Y., home to several pious sects. He accepted an arranged marriage, produced a large family and devoted himself to full-time study of the Torah and the Talmud. After 16 years of practically no contact, Hammer visited his brother and his family eight times during the course of a year, attempting to understand his brother's decision to renounce the secular world. Hammer scrutinizes the impact of Tuvia's ultra-Orthodox beliefs and practices on their nonobservant parents. He pulls no punches in describing Tuvia's life, including what he sees as his brother's religious extremism and racism, but admires his devotion and wishes him success. This perceptive narrative warmly recounts how, in one case, tolerant acceptance gradually replaced suspicious mistrust. (Nov.)

From Library Journal

In his first book, Newsweek correspondent Hammer writes about his troubled younger brother, Tony. The two brothers, children of divorce, had always taken different paths. Joshua, the older, more responsible son, had followed in his father's footsteps and become a noted journalist. Tony, always unsure of himself, found certainty and guidance during a trip to Israel, where he became an orthodox Jew. His lifestyle alienated his family, and Joshua lost contact with Tony, now Tuyve, for many years. In this book, Hammer insightfully details their reunion, recounting the time he spent with Tuyve and his large family in an orthodox suburb of New York. We see that Tuyve remains a troubled figureAhe still has difficulty holding down a jobAbut spirtuality provides meaning for him and his family. An insightful look at modern orthodox Jewish life from the inside, this book can be enjoyed by Jewish and non-Jewish readers alike. It is interesting to compare this book to a film on a similar transformation, The Return: The Story of a Young Jewish Couple's Journey to Orthodoxy (Video Reviews, LJ 5/15/99). Recommended for large general libraries and all libraries serving a Jewish clientele.APaul M. Kaplan, Lake Villa Dist. Lib., IL

5.0 out of 5 stars Chosen by God - A Reflection of his image, November 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Chosen By God: A Brother's Journey (Hardcover)
A reviewer, a Filmmaker & Theatre Artist, LA/NY, November 3, 1999, Chosen By God - A Reflection of His Image. As a reader of NEWSWEEK for years, I have followed journalist Joshua Hammer's writing from his serious journalism in Nairobi to his lighter fare in Los Angeles. In ten years of following his work, I came to know the honest, fearless and responsible journalist. I must be honest in telling you that I was shocked to meet the man in his first solo outing 'Chosen By God.' He is a journalist of the highest order, but what a marvelous surprise to discover his simple straightforward ability to tell a meaningful story. Mr. Hammer isn't afraid to let us in on his weaknesses, and his desire to find himself while finding his long-lost brother. There is no need to delve into the subject matter of this work, for it is dealt with in detail above, however, trust that as someone who is deeply familiar with the world that Mr. Hammer writes of, no matter what your faith or religious background, you will see yourself or someone you know in Mr. Hammer's tale. That is the true test of an enduring story. I recommend this work to those who are not looking for a pseudo-intellectual experience - but for those who are looking for a piece of life itself. Congratulations on a 'true' work.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN ODYSSEY INTO FUNDAMENTALISM, November 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Chosen By God: A Brother's Journey (Hardcover)
To understand his brother's flight to the outer fringe of fundamentalist Judaism, Joshua Hammer explores his own soul, and inspires his readers to explore theirs. Chosen by God is a remarkably objective reporting job: one can imagine how difficult it is to be objective about one's own family. It's an odyssey of sorts in which the author travels from Israel to Hassidic enclaves around New York City; from his teen years with his theatrically talented brother, Tony, to later visits with the bearded, dovening Tuvia his brother has become. Along the way the reader is taken into the environment that affected the two boys as they grew up: the divorce of their parents; his father's remarriage to a non-Jew; the loss of their little half-sister to a rare disease. Readers' lives will in no way resemble those of Joshua or Tony (Tuvia) Hammer, but they will gain insight into the ups and downs of their own lives, a better understanding of themselves, and perhaps some understanding of those friends or relatives who abandoned the secular world for fundamentalism. And they'll do so through a compelling story that's almost impossible to lay aside

5.0 out of 5 stars chosen by god, December 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Chosen By God: A Brother's Journey (Hardcover)
Joshua Hammer's book is revelatory - both of himself and his brother Tuvia. I got a real sense that Hammer's trips to Monsey were as much to define himself as it was to describe his brother Tony's move into ultra-orthodox Judaism.

Tony's move from Marxism to Chasidism was a change from one authoritarian system to another. He could just as easily become a Moonie, Catholic monk, Bahia depending on who found him first at that turmoiled time of his life.

The author's own journey was from complete scepticism and hostility to an examination of a life, at first totally ailen, and them understanding, and finally acceptance. He still, however, could not accept the complete rigidity of his brother's life.

Had it not been for his sister-in-law's Jewishness by choice and her, finally succesful attempt to bring Tuvia to an understanding of his role as a father and husband, the entire structure could have come crashing down. She also helped Hammer find some rationale for Tuvia.

In the end, however, the author realized that in finding his brother,he found more of himself and a deeper understanding of the dysfuntion in part of his family.

Joshua Hammer's journey is not yet complete. I'm looking forward to his next book
