Book Description

Chosen is a fantasy adventure - location; Hell, Purgatory, the Demon's Lair, and Hell is everything it's cracked up to be when you're sixteen and running for your soul.

Dynan Telaerin finds himself on a corpse-strewn hillside, uncertain if he's dead or alive, charged with saving his ancestor, the most powerful telepath to ever exist. Dynan has telepathic powers of his own, only he doesn't know how to use them. With monsters and minions hunting him down, the demon's lair isn't the place to learn anything - except how to run and how to hide. Will courage alone be enough to face the greatest evil to exist? Will he lose his soul to save everyone else?

The running starts, and doesn't stop to the end of this action packed adventure of a young man coming to terms with his life while he's barely a spirit, through horrors he thought existed only in dreams.

Chosen is the first book of the series, The Guardians of the Word, and is suitable for mature young adults. The Chronicles are Chosen, Myth, Telepath, Legend, Union, Seer, Adept and King.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast, furious and fun. May 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
What's Hot:
A great story with a full-on plot that seldom lets up. The world created is a fascinating blend of science-fiction and fantasy, with an emphasis on the latter. This book begins with high drama and the tantalising wiff of a ghost, before plunging into a convincingly realised fight to save the Universe. Tension is created by a chillingly specific vision of the future that then hangs over the characters. There is a real sense of threat, as the story hurtles into horror and the prophecy is steadily fulfilled. This book will keep you reading.

What's Not:
The writing is very competent, but the choice of words is not usually inspired and the grammar is sometimes awkward. Descriptions can be a little confused, with movements between minds and bodies sometimes hard to follow. The action is not as well described as it could be and it can be tricky to imagine exactly what is happening. There was a lengthiness to some parts (such as infiltrating the hospital) that had me skip reading and could have been condensed. There was some excellent characterisation, but also a lot that was more cliched, or tantalisingly unrealised. The lack of more interaction with Dain on his own was ultimately disappointing.

Summary:
A great read and at the price a no-brainer. Occasional lapses in the narrative, with weak descriptions, are more than compensated for by the sparkle of the story.

Dynan and his twin brother Dain don't know it, but they are born in fulfillment of an ancient prophecy, and if they can't live up to their destiny, it could mean the end of the world, brought about by the demon Belial. It all beings when Dynan finds a dangerous talisman while taking part in an archeological dig, and it ends up with him needing to find the originator of his line while in the spirit world.

It is really hard to describe the basic plot of this book without ending up giving spoilers, so I'll have to leave it there. What I will say is that this is an amazing work of science fantasy (a fantasy story set in a science fiction world, I guess is the way to describe it) - the characters are developed wonderfully, the history is outlined enough to help the reader understand what is happening, and there is a perfect blend of character development and action to keep fans of both schools of writing happy. Anyone who enjoys a good story, especially in a science fantasy vein, should absolutely love this book - I highly recommend it and suggest you take the time to track it down and read it as soon as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly enjoyable read! December 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Chosen is a truly enjoyable read with an endearing hero. After the introductions of the key characters and the scene setting, the story gallops at an amazing pace, stirring up a hornet's nest of spirits and creatures from the underworld which provide the backdrop where graphic fights, nail-biting flight and heart-stopping danger escalate to a resounding climax. For fans of sci-fi fantasy, a must-read.

More About the Author

Author Jolea M. Harrison is the author of the Epic Fantasy Series, Guardians of the Word. The Chronicles are Chosen, Myth, Telepath, Legend, Union, Seer, Adept and King. The last book is due to be released in March, 2013. Books 1-7 can be purchased through Amazon.com.

Ms. Harrison has been writing for as long as she can remember, when around the age of eight she dreamed up an epic tale of a young princess in search of the King's approval, who went out and killed the evil monster none of the knights could slay! This short story was even illustrated on 3 x 5 cards. After reading The Lord of the Rings, the fantasy bug left a permanent mark, which was then complicated by her immediate love of Star Wars and other works of science fiction.

She started her writing career many years ago when she started writing the Epic Fantasy series, The Guardians of the Word, which is eight books in length. The first book of the series, Chosen, was published in June, 2011. Myth, Telepath, Legend, Union, Seer and Adept followed over the course of the year. The final book of the series, King was released in March, 2013.

"It's been more than worth it, and I've enjoyed every minute, but especially getting to know the incredibly helpful and wonderful people I've met because I took a leap of faith. I'm a writer, a mother and manager of chaos. I try to do too many things at once, like so many of us, but it all usually works out. I love writing. It's what I'm passionate about and what I want to do above all other things."

Her other interests are gardening and maintaining her Civil War era home. On a recent fact finding mission about the house, she discovered the name of a young soldier who died there while being cared for by the doctor who owned the house at the time. Sometimes in the evening mists, it's not unusual to see the shapes of soldiers marching across the fields or hear 'something' climbing the stairs. She has two children who firmly believe in ghosts.
