5.0 out of 5 stars This Story Blew Me Away July 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Short Stories are like snacks between the meals of full-length novel-feasts. You'll finish the new short story by Emma Calin, The Chosen, in a scant fifteen minutes. But you'll want to read it again for the dialogue, and then maybe once more for the eerie setting.

Two low-lifes hatch plans for making it big, starting with a humdrum paint job and devolving into an insurance scheme. There's a lady in the story, too, to coin a phrase.

But the star of this story is the amazing dialogue, right out of a Harold Pinter stage-play.

"And what about cash right now -- we're skint mate."

"Aye -- I've already thought of that. It's what Henry B. Grabitt calls a contingency. I'll call that Black Fin pay day loan company that's on the tele. Then I'll call them lawyers at Compensation Nation. They get you the money you fully deserve. Once everyone knows that I'm expecting a big payout they'll be begging to lend me cash. It's called having a business mind my friend. It's about grasping the moment."

This story whips itself into a kaleidescope of colorful images and characters and expressions, each one sharper than the last, going off like firecrackers. Go ahead, have a little snack called The Chosen. It will blow you away.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Short Story October 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"The Chosen" has a kind of surprise ending that I think I don't quite get. I've read it a few times. I understand what happened. I understand what the characters did to get to where they are at the end. And yet I still feel like I'm missing something. Calin has created a character in J.A., and his folly is at first charming, but eventually tiring, much as anyone would find such a person in real life. I can't help but wonder if his fate was accidental, or if he had planned it all along. There's just something about the punchline of this story that I feel like I'm missing, though I don't feel that is the fault of the author. Still, an interesting read and one that has kept me questioning the ending, whether the author intended it that way or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why love drives you crazy July 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Chosen is the second of Emma Calin's short stories I have read. Both are jewels that come at life from the underside of the leaf. They are stories of ordinary, common people who hold to their dreams and reach for things beyond their grasp.
The Chosen is a story about unquenchable hope, ill-founded on a love sure to go bad. It is about hare-brained schemes, not thought-through, sure to fail.
The first sentence sums it up: "Of course, there had to be a woman in the story."
Of course.
I also enjoyed Oscar Sparrow's narration of the free audio version of the story available to purchasers of the book.
Highly recommended.
