4.0 out of 5 stars Two boys' review: Quirky bulldog delivers fun bedtime story...for adults, too!
Meet Chowder. A weird little bulldog who is looking for his place in the world...and what a funny world in which he lives!

Two other silly characters, Madge and Bernie Wubbington, are straight out of Best in Show. They are a childless couple who lavish love and attention on their little bulldog (who resembles a five-year old boy).

3.0 out of 5 stars nice graphics, wierd story
I know I'm not a kid anymore, but this story is rather out there. The graphics pulled me in though - nice to see something different. I did purchase this for my son - but he hasn't responded to it much yet.

Anyone who has spent a summer afternoon in a supermarket parking lot will laugh as the Wubbington family heads off to "Food Ranch." Author Peter Brown takes an everyday event - grocery shopping - and stands it on its head.

The message is simple and easy to follow: it is okay to be different. Even though Chowder doesn't fit in with other dogs he ultimately finds friends that appreciate his quirky behavior.

In summary, Chowder is a great bedtime reading book for young children. The School Library Journal recommends this book for grades 1-4. My oldest son will be a first grader this fall and he was able to read about a third of the words in the book. That said, Chowder stands up well to repeated readings. Rating: Four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!, September 6, 2006
By
This review is from: Chowder (Hardcover)
Chowder had always been different. He really was like no other dog. He was quirky, not weird as other people thought of him. He wanted to be like the other animals, but he just wasn't. His people owners, the Wubbingtons, loved him dearly, but they were a little quirky themselves.

When Chowder learned that there was a Critter Coral (petting zoo) at the Food Ranch, he devised a plan to go there and meet the animals. He thought the Critter Coral animals would befriend him. After an unusual incident, the 'critters' embraced all that was unique about Chowder (they had their own quirky behaviors) and he had new friends at last.

I expect there will be laughter and delight in the animal antics. Be prepared to read this story over and over again.

Armchair Interviews says: Children will enjoy the creative story of Chowder.

My family loves Peter Brown children's books and I am happy to say this another great one to add to our collection. The story is cute and the illustrations are fantastic, I think the humor is intended for children and adults alike. The first time I read this to my 2.5 year old she was cracking up and asked me to read it again and again. I look forward to and anticipate more books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and cute!, February 24, 2010
This review is from: Chowder (Hardcover)
One of my students checked this book out from our school library and I was immediately drawn to it. I borrowed it from him and read the book, laughing out loud the whole time. Of course, the kids all begged me to read it to them since they saw me laughing so I did. They really loved it and laughed throughout the story. It's a cute story about friendship and being different. My class definitely thought it was entertaining!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a dog's life, September 21, 2009

Chowder is a favorite of my 5 yr. old, who laughs out loud at the illustrations. Chowder the bulldog, never fits in with the neighborhood dogs. They dig for bones, he digs for fossils. Chowder is lonely but comes up with a great plan to make friends. This is a good story about being different, and persevering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go Chowder!, July 20, 2009

Our whole family loves reading Chowder. We are partial to English Bulldogs though because we have one running our family. My husband and I find it interesting that the author doesn't have a Bulldog because he certainly has pegged the English Bulldog's quirky and fun-loving personality in Chowder's character. We get many laughs out of Chowder and even more when we visualize our Bully doing what Chowder does. If you have an English Bulldog, this is a great book and even if you don't, it is still a fun read.

"Chowder" is the most delightful story of a very unique dog who definitely marches to the beat of his own drummer and finds love and acceptance wherever he goes. A great story especially for children who might not fit the accepted mold of who they think they're supposed to be but it's also great for adults. The artist is spare in his details but the pictures totally capture the character of this bulldog and his family and friends. I recommend "Chowder" for everyone, everywhere. Great book.
