Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

An odd but sweet and frequently funny animated series, Chowder is the brainchild of writer and artist C.H. Greenblatt, whose previous credits, SpongeBob SquarePants and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (among others), are echoed by the surreal goings-on in this program. Set in the bustling metropolis of Marzipan City, Chowder follows the adventures of its eponymous hero (voiced by Nicky Jones), an excitable young creature whose impulsive nature often gets in the way of his abiding dream: to learn the art of cooking from his employer, master chef Mung Daal (Dwight Schultz). Episodes generally follow Chowder's sincere attempts to please Mung, which range from thumb-wrestling a complicated dish into submission ("The Froggy Apple Crumple Thumpkin") to staying up all night to complete a recipe ("The Sing Beans"); others focus on his equally odd friends and fellow employees, like his gaseous pet Kimchi, who falls in love with a odiferous meal in "Stinky Love," or the rabbit-like Panini, who harbors a crush on Chowder in "Chowder's Girlfriend." More often than not, the show veers into genuinely dream-like territory, as in "The Thrice Cream Man," where Chowder becomes obsessed with a creature made from a sweet dessert. As novel premises and execution goes, Chowder compares favorably to Greenblatt's other animation credits, though one wonders if he'll be able to maintain the off-kilter charm of the ten episodes included in this disc over the course of multiple seasons; the engaging weirdness of the characters and stories certainly makes one hope he can. All of the episodes mentioned here are included in the single disc, along with five other stories (not shown in their original broadcast order), which makes for only half of the first season's episodes; given their short running time (about 10 minutes), one wonders why the entire season couldn't have been packaged in this set. Also, a glimpse into the Greenblatt's creative process would have been welcomed by fans and first-time viewers alike, but the sole extra is a storyboard comparision. -- Paul Gaita

Product Description

Marzipan City is a place where anything can happen and the unorthodox is commonplace. In the middle of this bizarre city is a quaint little shop known as Mung Daal Catering, which is owned by Mung Daal, one of the ost accomplished chefs and well known in the entire world. However, things have become a bit hectic in the kitchen as of late, as Mung Daal has recently acquired a young apprentice named Chowder, whom he wishes to pass along all of his knowledge towards. Chowder is an energetic young lad who wishes to become the greatest chef in the world, but his love of food and his extremely short attention span often results in him causing unintended havoc. However, theyre not alone. Truffles works at Mung Daal Catering and she takes the orders that her husband, Mung Daal, must prepare. Shnitzel, a rock monster, also helps out in the kitchen as he has worked for Mung Daal for years. Along the way, theyll meet the many colorful and zany residents of Marzipan City, though there will always be new dishes to prepare and exciting recipes to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best new cartoon November 12, 2008
Chowder is a great cartoon and I'm thrilled to have it on DVD finally! I just wish the first Vol. contained more episodes than 5, when the first season had 20 episodes total.

Segments included on this DVD:
- The Froggy Apple Crumple Thumpkin / Chowder's Girlfriend
- Grubble Gum / The Cinnamini Monster
- Certifrycation Class / The Sing Beans
- Majhongg Night / Stinky Love
- The Thrice Cream Man / The Flibber-Flabber Diet

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Cartoon-Skimpy DVD July 10, 2009
I love Chowder. but this is too little content for the price.
This DVD does not contain half of Season 1. It contains one fourth of Season 1. There were 20 episodes containing 38 cartoons (Two were double length). This DVD contains 10 of the 38 cartoons as five episodes. The description above says 10 episodes when it is actually ten cartoons. The widescreen picture is beautiful, and the cartoons are grouped into two cartoon episodes (just like on TV) so that you get to see all of the clever and funny openings and closing credits. The menus are well done, and include a "Play All" option. But this is gonna cost over $[...]bucks for the first season IF they all come out on DVD!?!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must buy for animation lovers January 23, 2009

Chowder is really one of the greatest things to come along on Cartoon Network since Dexters Lab. It has a different and highly creative art style that is absolutly gorgeous. Not to mention that the show itself is hilarious and fresh. I already have both seasons downloaded through Zune, but buying the DVD's was a no brainer as soon as I heard about the widescreen format.
It seems trivial but the full widescreen picture, which the show is originally made for, makes quite a difference even from the intro and you get to see all the beautiful lighting on the inner sides of the oven that you couldnt see before. Also, the picture quality itself is improved drastically over digital downloads, no more digital artifacts blurring up the screen during Chowders many random food transitions or fast sequences. The dvd looks amazing and crisp even on my 1080p TV being played off an xbox360. My only gripe is that you only get a few episodes per DVD, and the next installment isn't even due for another few months yet cruddy shows like Bakkugan are already on their 3rd dvd. Come on, CN don't hold out on us!

1.0 out of 5 stars A Poor Excuse for a TV Show, If You Ask Me
I have seen a few episodes of this cartoon, but that isn't enough to say how bad it is. If I can find one show that doesn't make any sense, "Chowder" definitely fits that bill. Read more

The guy in the clouds
actually hes less like god and more like "mother nature" in the fact that he controls the weather, so really hes a weatherman.
