Barber's first great band,

This review is from: Chris Barber 1955 (Audio CD)
The best traditional jazz band ever to come out of England is well represented with these early recordings. The front line of Halcox, Sunshine, and Barber remained unchanged for at least a decade and the recordings from 1955 to 1965 were, in my opinion, their best examples in the true traditional jazz medium.

Chris Barber,

This one'll be a little bit personal. At the time several of these tracks were recorded... (October, 1953-June, 1956), I was with my family accompanying my father who was stationed in the London Area. Chris Barber was introducing me to jazz through the medium of scratchy 78rpm records. I had other favorites, such as Ted Heath, Eric Delaney and Humphrey Lyttelton, but Chris Barber was my top choice.
One of the things I liked about Chris Barber was repeated for me later by Gerry Mulligan. I don't necessarily like all jazz, but the stuff that really crumbles my cookie is the performers really enjoying themselves. These three Chris Barber recordings really brought back some good times for me! Bill Burch ;~} |
