A compelling show where music takes the lead over theatrics,
By Mark (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chris Rea - Farewell Tour (DVD)
I doubt even the hardest of hearts would not be moved by the version of "Til The Morning" on this DVD. Its worth the purchase price alone. Just beautiful in its simplicity and delivery.
I had never heard the song before but watched in awe as Chris delivers it in one of the most tender moments that surely has ever been captured on a concert film. Its a very simple concert in that there are no theatrics, no special lighting, no nothing. Just Chris and his band who all look like they are on their way to the pub after the show for a counter meal. And yet in that setting you cant help but focus on Chris, his guitar and that flawless voice and believe me that is enough to more than satisfy. I am not a huge Chris Rea fan in that I only know some of his music from one of his greatest hits CDs but thats about it. I purchased this on a whim and i hope many people who like me only have a casual acquaintance with his music do the same. If you ever read your own reviews - I wish you good health and a long life (I sadly discovered you do have health issues)and thank you for the music. Enjoy more time with your family and the rest of us can watch this great DVD.

Chris Rea's Best,
This review is from: Chris Rea: Road to Hell and Back (DVD)
This is Chris Rea's Best CD ever!! I love the live recordings and the way you can feel how much Chris puts into his music. I wish the US radio stations would have played more of his music in the past, alot of people are missing a GREAT artist!!! Clifford Sleeth Houston Texas.

I've lost count of the number of Chris Rea albums I own so I feel moderatly qualified to touch on this DVD. If you love deep, soulfull, grass roots blues than this concert is for you. If you're expecting "Watersign, Wired to the moon or even New light through old windows", forget it. This is so far away from the commercial style of his work as to be almost another catagory. Even the familiars such as "on the beach" and "I can hear your heart beat" are full of chord changes with a whole different feel that renders them almost unrecognisable. Don't get me wrong, Rea is and always will be a class act but if you're like me and have built your appreciation on the many touching and mood inspiring albums he's produced than leave your impressions intact and steer clear of this piece of work or buy it for posterity as a record of the time Chris Rea though his health would put an end to a great career. Ironically my wife who hasn't been a fan enjoyed this DVD being a lover of the blues.

His recent serious illness has made Rea reassess his musical priorities and this is the superb result. I live only 60 miles from where this concert was recorded and only wish I had seen this live.

I know that Chris Rea was wanting to do a concert full of his favorites and not necessarily the hits that made him famous. Too bad, because as great as he is, I really missed hearing and seeing those tunes! Some of the songs were just kinda boring, they didn't have the magic of his earlier hits. Don't get me wrong, the guy is an awesome guitarist and singer.... it just felt a little flat. Also, the quality of the concert footage looked dull.... it lacked crispness. But, considering there's not as much video of this guy from over the years as some other artists.... I'll still take it! Chris Rea should have been way more famous in the States than he is today!!

FABULOUS! I loved the clean, simple approach to the production of the tour. No hype, no fluff, just Chris Rea and the music! Loved it. His talent is so underestimated by so many.

I became a fan of Chris Rea's the moment I first heard On The Beach on the air. I then sought out to purchase every recording by Chris, which was not easy since being in Ohio, USA. I have never been able to see Chris perform live so I jumped at the purchase of this DVD. Even though I would have liked to hear more of his hits over the years, to actually see him live & hear that voice, is still worth the price. Great concert, great sound, great quality, & also great insight in to one of the best artist's in the music business. Oh yeah, I have all the recordings but one.

Chris Rea - the BEST, yet most under-promoted artist ever.,
This review is from: Chris Rea - Farewell Tour (DVD)
I first heard Chris Rea in the late 80's, when exposed to his music through a British boyfriend. I'd never heard his music in America until VH1 began to play tracks/videos from "Road to Hell". Also, since there were never any American tours I knew of, I was never able to see him perform live. He is without doubt the most talented, yet most under-rated and under-promoted artist in musical history. When I learned a little of his background, I could not help wonder why the heck he wasn't as well known in America as the likes of Clapton, and Rundgren. Until the Internet shopping age, the only place I could EVER get his music was while travelling through the U.K. So unfortunate. And even today, I can only find a smattering of his music on I-Tunes. WHAT GIVES??? Why so under promoted???!! I love Chris Rea!

Being a Chris Rea fan i really enjoyed this DVD but was suprised at the different tempos of certain tracks between the DVD and the CDs but realise live shows are recorded differently and over many years. Enjoyed the "Blues" in particularly.

Worth the wait,
This review is from: Chris Rea - Farewell Tour (DVD)
Right from 'Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?' Chris Rea has held a special place in English pop. He's had dozens of hits, and reached the peak of his popularity with the Road to Hell album - so much so that when he performed the album live, many famous musicians were in attendance to witness one of the greatest (and underrated) guitarists and singer/songwriters around.
That said, Rea has evolved into a blues artist. This, clearly, is both his choice and his right. So, with the release, finally, of a Chris Rea DVD, the result for a long-time fan will inspire mixed feelings. This is a low-key, subdued affair, and heavily blues-oriented. Those new to Chris' work, especially blues fans, will enjoy, rather than be stunned, by this DVD. And fans of his work over the years will be disappointed by the lack of his string of hits going back over the decades. Having said that, patience does reward the fans with the last few songs form the concert, which, ironically, create the most positive audience response. While Stainsby Girls and The Road to Hell aren't as explosive as they once were, they do make this a must-own for fans. Hence the three-star rating - it's pleasant, blues-heavy, the musicianship is wonderful, but for fans of Chris Rea's popular body of work, it's impossible to get through this without wishing that the DVD was from the Road to Hell-Auberge-God's Great Banana Skin-Espresso Logic era. |
