Nonfiction: Start with a Market Analysis

12:04 PM PST, February 2, 2010
THE TEACHER'S EDITION

This question arrived from LC:

"Currently I'm writing a nonfiction that refers, at times, to experiences I've gone through to serve as examples in different chapters. How do I keep this from being labeled a memoir or autobiography by a publisher?

What key elements does a nonfiction have that distinguishes it from this genre, other than instruction/how to details?"

Dear LC:

Both parts of your question depend on your doing a little market analysis. You'll have to do this anyway to interest an agent and a publisher, or -- if you plan to self-publish -- to reach the readers you want. But well before those steps, your answers will show you what you need to do at this time to focus your content effectively, to include the key elements your true market expects, and enable the editor you choose to develop the manuscript to fit its most likely genre and become ready for its next step on the road to publication.

1. What's your purpose for writing this book? (e.g., helping others? personal catharsis? other?)

2. Visualize your ideal reader. Then list 6 specific ways this reader will benefit from your book (list his or her benefits, not your book's features).

3. Visit a bookstore to learn where a book like yours might be shelved. Which other books are shelved there now?

4. List the ways your book is different from those shelfmates. Also list the ways yours is better.

5. How do your book's benefits compare with what's listed on the covers of those other books?

6. What categories do these other books show at the top of their back covers? If those categories fit your book, there's your "label." If they don't fit, repeat from #3 above.

Biography

I couldn't believe it! On the eve of Book Expo America 2009 in New York, my 11th book, DON'T SABOTAGE YOUR SUBMISSION, won the Benjamin Franklin Award for Literary Criticism! The next day it won the Bronze Medal for Writing Book of the Year from ForeWord Magazine. Both are national, juried competitions.

DON'T SABOTAGE YOUR SUBMISSION is advice from my 44 years in publishing, intended for writers in all genres -- an expanded edition of my earlier book, DON'T MURDER YOUR MYSTERY, which had the honor of:

* winning the 2006 Agatha Award for Best Nonfiction Book (named for the great Agatha Christie,… Read more
