I loved Hot Water Music. This album has a great sound and I would suggest you aging punks who are getting less angry pick it up.
emo kids, you guys continue to cry, its cool.

don't understand these reviews. this album puts me in a good mood whenever i listen to it. perfect for long late night drives. i think most bands are a cut below this, and could learn a lot from chris' song-writing. but that's just me.

The feeling I get when listening to this is the same as when I heard Frank Black's first cuts outside the Pixies. One person does not make a band. In one sentence I would describe this as such: This is what running out of ideas sounds like.
I can't help but give everyone a big "A" for effort but I can't identify with any of this. I know we can't all relive the old days but I'm hoping that Chris got something out of his system with this release and moves into something spread a little less thin. This makes Blacktop Cadence sound like a rock opera, even with the crappy drum mix.

Lost in the sea of Indie music,

I picked this up after hearing "Oh, Whatever" on my Pandora radio station. I really liked it so I listened to the snippets on Amazon and took a chance.
This CD is good...it's just not something that will blow you away. There are just so many Alternative bands out there now delivering decent new material at an alarming rate, that to really be noticed, you need to be a cut above..."Chris Wollard and the Ship of Thieves" doesn't, IMO, quite make that cut. I know the phrase "All their songs sound the same" is overused (and rather redundant in a way, considering to some degree, that is true of ALL bands), but Chris Wollard's vocals (at least I ASSUME that is him) do start to grate on you a bit after a few listens. Maybe it's a personal thing but that is how it affected me. Still quite an enjoyable CD though. Besides "Oh, Whatever", my personal favorites are "No Exception" and "High water" (which reminds me a lot of something off of Soundgarden's "Superunknown"). All in all, I'd give this 3 1/2 stars if I were able, but not 4. Your mileage may vary. |
