5.0 out of 5 stars Throw out the CD Case - You'll Never Take the Disk Out of Your Player
I have to first say - I was skeptical. I really expected that this highly-anticipated major label debut was going to get too 'Country-Fried' with the current Nashville Sound.

3.0 out of 5 stars Really, three and a half stars
Why not four? Why not five? Because I just can't. I mean no offense to Chris Young--he is one of the best singers who's come out in ages; his voice is a twangy baritone that sounds right at home amid honky-tonks and barrooms and country music in general. He even has a knack for songwriting--"Drinkin' Me Lonely" is one of the best debut singles to come out recently...

I have to first say - I was skeptical. I really expected that this highly-anticipated major label debut was going to get too 'Country-Fried' with the current Nashville Sound.

In the wake of the success of acts like Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban, I feared this release was going to have the same problem as both of these acts... Great talents (tremendous talents actually) taking Top 40 - Pop Music, adding a fiddle and/or harmonica and calling it country. And who wouldn't think that, especially coming off of the Country version of American Idol?

For me the only reason to suffer through Wynona and Cowboy Troy awkwardly stumble through Nashville Star each week, was to hear this guy sing. (No Offense, but stick to singing guys)

But that's not the case. This guy IS the Next Alan Jackson or George Strait. Yes - I actually said it. And no - he doesn't sound like, or rip off, anyone else's style.
Chris Young is, well - Chris Young. A terrific voice with an honesty that comes through in his music that is so dearly lacking in most of what passes for Country Music these days.

Don't believe the hype? Buy it and try it yourself. I'll bet you find the same problem as I did: My ride to work just wasn't long enough to play the whole CD, and then go back to replay my favorites.
Heck - it's hard to choose a favorite, each of these tunes really deserves to be on the CD.

Laugh through 'White Lightning', 'Beer or Gasoline' and 'I'm Headed Your Way, Jose' but look out for for 'Flowers' it'll jerk a tear.
And the 2-step tempo on 'Drinkin' me Lonely' is different from the stripped-down acoustic version he WOWed America with on TV, but it is still destined to hit the top 10 - Maybe even higher.

A real breath of fresh air for Country Music. Get on board folks, this is the next man of country music, it's gonna be a great ride.

Great Job Chris Young!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Debut CD, October 8, 2006

Good country voice. Good listening. Several songs I really enjoy. "Beer or Gasoline" is cute, "You're Gonna Love Me" and "Drinkin' Me Lonely" are well sung and "I'm Headed Your Way, Jose" is great fun. "Flowers" is also good. I was pleasantly surprised with many good songs. (I bought it for his Nashivlle Star song, "Drinkin' Me Lonely) and was not disappointed with the whole album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding debut album!, October 4, 2006

Expectations were high for this album and Chris really delivered! This is a first rate CD from the songs to the production! Chris calls it progressive traditional which is a perfect name for it. The songs would be very at home on the radio today, yet he holds true to traditional country. The song selection is so diverse with no fillers here! Each song stands on it's own. They all tell a story; whether it is a tearjerker, a great tongue in cheek comedic song, or an uplifting, feel good song. His rich baritone voice resonates on the ballads, which he does a phenomenal job with and then he rocks out with the best of them on some up-tempo southern rock. He starts with a fun up-tempo song, Beer or Gasoline, runs the gamut of emotions and then leaves us with Who's Gonna Take me Home. Who wouldn't want to at that point! In a concert, I bet he would have a lot of takers. There's truly something here for everyone and you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chris Young Has Got It All, October 6, 2006

It has been a long time since I have been so excited about a CD. This CD is a great mix of music from a tear jerker (Flowers) to a couple of tunes that make you LOL (White Lightening and Your Way, Jose). Ballad or up tempo song, this guy can sing! He has that smooth Tennesee baritone voice that makes you keep listening to every song over and over again. I am a huge country music fan, and having heard this CD I can only think "YES, this is what I have been wanting to hear!" I love every song on the CD! This is only the beginning for the rising star of Chris Young! A must buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tradition and value rarely found in a newcomer, October 6, 2006
This review is from: Chris Young (Audio CD)
Chris scores big with "Chris Young", his debut CD. His voice is rich, mellow and professional and he handles all types of songs in a more than competent manner, so much so that he sounds every inch the established artist. I particularly like the comedic songs which hint at daily "redneck" challenges and responses, whether real or simply based on stereotypes:

Should I spend my hard-earned money on beer or gasoline? (Beer or gasoline)
What will happen if a potent batch of hooch is introduced to a family gathering and how lively will things become if we all get to show our hiney?
(White lightning hit the family tree)
Is life in the "good ol' USA" really so good?

Here's the keys to my chevrolet, you can have my house and the bills I pay, I'm headed your way, Jose (I'm headed your way, Jose)

Who's gonna drive me home when I'm "country fried"? (Who's gonna take me home?)

They all make great sing-alongs.

Chris also addresses the perennial man v. woman issues in "lay it on me", which is delivered in an upbeat fashion, small town entertainments (Small town big time) and delivers a scorching love song in "you're the center of my world," a song loaded with traditional sentiments but also packed with so much emotion that it positively drips. "You're gonna love me" is not quite as strong but will still appeal. There is also a tear-jerker in "Flowers, which doesn't release the full weight of its sorrow until the last verse when it becomes clear that it is not a case of separation but more the final separation. Then there's "Burn" which calls to mind the 15 minutes of fame that we are all supposed to have when we periodically burst into the limelight if only later to return to our deep cave darkness.

I get a little more out of each listen of the album and it has scarcely left my CD player since I received my pre-ordered copy.

A great job, Chris! Congratulations!

5.0 out of 5 stars HUGE Debut for Chris Young, October 7, 2006
By
This review is from: Chris Young (Audio CD)
It's very rare that I get a cd, much less a debut cd, from an artist and I can honestly say there's not a bad track in the bunch, but I'm glad to say that I can say that about this one. I watched and voted in the Nashville Star competiton and I am so glad to see this release. The song choices are excellent, the production is outstanding and what can I say about Chris's voice except that it's excellent! I would be happy to hear any of these tracks on the radio, but will say my favorites are of course the 1st single, "Drinkin' Me Lonely", the excellent message song "Flowers" and the tounge firmly planted in cheek "I'm Heading Your Way, Jose". The disc starts off on a high note with "Beer Or Gasoline" and doesn't let you down until "Who's Gonna Take Me Home" which is another great track. If you love your country, then you have to love newcomer Chris Young. Give him a listen and see if you don't agree.

I have to say I love every tract on this CD. Chris has a big range to his voice. I have always thought he would make it when I first saw him on Nashville Star. This is a great first showing of what he is capable of putting out there. I look forward to more to come from this young rising star. Buy this album you wont regret it.
