Scripturally Sound Encouragement,
By M. Glenn "Merry Blessings Birth Services" (Chicora, PA United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Christ Centered Childbirth (Paperback)
I am a doula and mom of five. I read Christ Centered Childbirth during my fifth pregnancy. After reading the book, I am telling everyone about it. (I've lent it to several gals already.)I will also include this book in every baby shower gift I buy from here on out. It is a must read for every woman of childbearing age with a uterus! Every woman should know the biblical truth about her birthing abilities through Christ.
This book is great for husbands too. SO often a husband falls into the backround during birth..but this book gives them the scriptural understanding and back up to help comfort them during the birthing process too. Mrs. Townsend doesn't focus so much on the mother that she leaves out the "two shall become one" part. And by giving them the scriptural references, it helps keep them united with their wives and up holds them as the spiritual head ---as God intended. This book is informative without being pushy. This book is encouraging without teaching a false doctrine or using a name-it-and-claim-it attitude. This book just gives you God's Word...and by doing so, it equips you with the knowledge and encouragement that you need to trust God and bring Christ into the center---where He belongs. It's not promising a painless childbirth. It's not promising a deep spiritual experience. It doesn't feed you hype about how faith will make you achieve a natural un-medicated birth. It DOES give you the scriptural encouragement to trust God's will, timing, plan and purpose for your birth. It does give you the scriptural references and the prayerful encouragement to set aside fear and anxiety. It does encourage you to get involved in your healthcare, deepen your relationship with your spouse, build you up for the task of motherhood, call you to dust off your bible and strengthen your walk with the Lord. It encourages fellowship with other women, your spouse, your doula...but most importantly with Christ. Awesome book! Great tool! Highly recommend it!

A Must-Read For Expectant Moms!,
By
This review is from: Christ Centered Childbirth (Paperback)
I came across this book after searching for something to help me deal with the fears I had created after my 4th birth. I can't say enough about how incredibly helpful Christ-Centered Childbirth was in the preparation for my 5th baby (and first home-birth!). It was unlike any secular or Christian material I had read in the past (and I read A LOT).
Ms. Townsend does a fantastic job of explaining the physical aspects of birth as well as revealing biblical insights about God's design for birth and the power of allowing God to be in control of everything - including birth. This book made a tremendous difference in my labor and birth and I experienced a closeness to the Lord I had never known -during childbirth or otherwise! I highly recommend this material for any expectant woman as well as birth professionals. I also recommend Jennifer Vanderlaan's "The Lord of Birth" as a wonderful companion to this book. Thank you, Ms. Townsend, for this God-inspired material that all Christian women should read to more fully understand birth from a biblical perspective. And, thank you for showing me the beauty of having my own Christ-Centered birth.

Amazing Book!,
This review is from: Christ Centered Childbirth (Paperback)
I was given this book by my friend and doula after announcing that I wanted my 4th baby to be born at home. I read through it quite quickly and loved every moment! It is a book I think every Christian woman should read before venturing into labor! I wish I had this book back in 2000 when I was pregnent with my first baby! All I can say is buy it and read it and you won't be sorry. -Especially if you are fearful of birth- You will discover that God is in control and is with you. Also it is importnat to not be fearful b/c there are real reasons mentioned in this book that can negatively effect your labor!
There should be more books out there that address the fact that Jesus is Lord over all- including birth! This book can even be a Bible Study at your church. If you read it, you can be sure it will be a continuous shower gift for every girlfriend in the future!

Wasn't everything I hoped it would be.,

I definitely appreciate that this book was christ-centered and not "new-ageish" like most of the birthing books I have found. That said, it wasn't as good as I had hoped based on the other 5-star reviews. I had expected more nitty-gritty how-to info for during labor. In actuality, I found that it presented a lot of basic info on childbirth that I already knew and less christ-centered coping techniques. I am a born-again Christian, but I was a little bit weirded out by the part asking you to write down ways that you can assure that you won't be rude or inconsiderate to anyone at the hospital while you're in labor. Rudeness is clearly never something to be carried out by a Christian and should be a non-thought. When you're in transition and getting ready to push the baby out, though, I cannot imaging referring to your list of strategies about how to not be rude and thinking them over, etc. Your focus will be on getting the baby out and not much else!

I would highly recommend this book to any mother looking for a spiritual birth experience. This book helped keep me on track during my pregnancy. It really helps put the focus back on God and putting all of your trust in Him. It helped me to let go of any fears. I had 2 wonderful homebirths and I attribute it a lot to the teachings of this book. With the 2nd birth I went back through the book again with another pregnant girlfriend as a bible study. It worked great for that. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the study questions are a bit repetitive. I think they could of formulated some better questions. Overall I don't' know of another book like this out there and so I would highly recommend it.

Just what our culture needs - and then some!,

This review is from: Christ Centered Childbirth (Paperback)
I am Founder of Blessing God's Way - a ministry that focuses on the blessing of children as well as our other God-given cycles... and I have sold Mrs. Townsend's book for the last 4 years when I do confernces and hold birth related meetings. This book was so helpful to me, personally, with my 5th pregnancy and delivery - I am so grateful for her constant advice to take my thoughts captive and focus on God's goodness and the work of Christ for us and our salvation. I used her ideas, her techniques for focusing and found them to be most helpful in keeping my eyes upon Jesus during my pushing stage. I tell women now, "God doesn't leave the building, so to speak, during the last stage of labor" and then I direct them to Christ Centered Childbirth to understand how I can say such a statement!
Women need to be encouraged, supported and exhorted during this time in their lives. This book is a practical tool in doing so. I am grateful for her ablility to put this great knowledge in book form to share with so many other women, helping create a better birthing world for us all.

Going against the flow in pregnancy and childbirth!,
By
This review is from: Christ Centered Childbirth (Paperback)
The author of this book does a phenomenal job capturing and explaining the essence of Christian childbirth, in a manner useful and relevant to life in today's society. The concept of Christian childbirth infuses the message of Romans 12:2 into a world where childbirth has been culturally twisted from the blessed miracle of life into a medical event tainted by fear and distrust. Parents are called to renew their minds through God's word, restoring faith in the process created by God to bring forth new life. While fostering both medically and scripturally informed decision-making, the book guides the reader through the creation of a new family, from trusting God's will before conception, to prenatal communication and pregnancy stewardship, to the labor process and the physiological effects fear has upon it. It also provides the expectant couple with extensive practical information and scriptural encouragement for labor.
This is a vital guide for bringing spirituality back into birth and reinstating the wonder of its divine design. With a sensitivity rarely seen elsewhere, attention is given to such important topics as a father's valuable presence at the birth, and the profound effects of caregivers' attitudes and postpartum depression upon the well being of a new family. With the helpful addition of resources such as Bible study guides, beautiful birth testimonies, an explanation of salvation, and even her own faith statement, author Kelly Townsend addresses all the essentials!

This was a great addition to my pregnancy and labor readings. Sometimes as a Christian when you're looking for guidance into natural childbirth you can find some "spiritual" wisdom that can take on a strange new age feel. This book gave me the Scriptures I needed to know and remember that God is in control and on the throne, and that He made my body for the express purpose of giving life to children. While He has also blessed us with modern medicine to help with troubled pregnancies and births, it is ok for me to trust my God-given natural ability and instincts to birth this child in an un-medicated fashion.

The Best Birth/Christian Book, Hands Down!,

This review is from: Christ Centered Childbirth (Paperback)
After the many many books I've read, between secular and Christian, this is THEE best book and I recommend it to ANY woman who is having a child, even if this is your 3rd or more! It's also going to make a great in-church bible study and I believe God will fire up a revolution from it's pages.
This book covers all the bases. It not only covers the basics about the physiological stages of development, symptoms and nutrition, it gives encouragement and how-to's to draw on God's love and His amazing design of life. The most important premise to remember is this: No matter what kind of birth you go through, the labor and trials of birth (and it's graces) are put in place BY GOD to bring you closer to Him, and in this, every birthing woman (and hopefully her husband too!) will be filled with the Joy of His good pleasure.

Great for believers giving birth!,

This review is from: Christ Centered Childbirth (Paperback)
This book is great, and I'd recommend it to every friend even considering giving birth. Its full of great information about natural childbirth in general. I appreciate that it speaks both to the husband and wife in a way that most childbirth books do not. My husband feels more prepared for childbirth now than he did trying to read heavy books like What to Expect When Your Expecting.
On top of simply explaining the birth process and pregnancy, it also gives such a great representation of how Christ can be a part of your experience. It is filled with scriptures that encourage the parents during the pregnancy and childbirth. It is really setting my mind on things above. My only warning is that the book really needs a good publisher to come in and clean it up. There are a ton of type-o's and some sentence structure mistakes. The cover could even use some work... but like they say, "don't judge a book by its cover." It is totally worth overlooking these things because the heart behind the book is awesome and she really does a great job giving you a good picture of birth as well as focusing this picture around Christ. |
