Preliminary Review of what looks to be a great book!,
By Don Smith (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Christ! I Want Your Body: A Layman's Search for the Church Representing the Teachings of Jesus of Nazareth (Paperback)
I was going to wait until I'd read through the entire book before posting a review here, but I thought I should post my initial (very positive) thoughts. The personal touch is always important to me and Jordan makes this evident from the first page - this is not a dry and detached thesis -this is a thinking and caring man's faith journey. In just the first 20 pages, he is able to hit on several key aspects of (liberal) Christianity which resonate with me. The writing style is familiar, not preachy, and expresses ideas clearly and concisely. Hopefully I'll give the book a "final" 5-star review - it certainly merits it so far!

Review: Christ! I Want Your Body,
By Dennis Dean Carpenter (Duluth, Ga (USA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Christ! I Want Your Body: A Layman's Search for the Church Representing the Teachings of Jesus of Nazareth (Paperback)
Within the pages of Christ! I Want Your Body, by James J. Jordan, lies the good works of the Realm of the Spirit, or Kingdom of God. As Mr. Jordan says, "The thought of experiencing God invites our minds to encompass an understanding of what it is like to realize the fullness of that spiritual power within ourselves." This book was quite an undertaking, in which the author pulled thoughts of many of the greatest biblical scholars of the last century along with thoughts from some of the greatest thinkers of our time to produce a compendium of references about the Kingdom of God or Realm of the Spirit, as was taught by the historical Jesus. It is more than that. For those who are interested in the history of Christianity, there is a time line and also a synopsis of its development, with facts that are not generally known by the public. There is a section dealing with the current and changing religious beliefs of Americans. It is loaded with information Christians probably should but might not know about the religion, written in an informal style that makes it entertaining as well as informative. Skeptic that I am, when I read this book I kept wondering when I would come to point where I would say, "Aha! I disagree totally!" That point never came. Mr. Jordan has written a book that should be in the library of everyone who is interested in the Realm of the Spirit. Dennis Dean Carpenter

Living Church magazine review quoted by permission.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Christ! I Want Your Body: A Layman's Search for the Church Representing the Teachings of Jesus of Nazareth (Paperback)
The following can be found on page 10 of the 6/6/04 issue of the independant weekly magazine serving Episcopalians since 1878.The shocking title belies this book's sincere search by the author to find Jesus under all the layers of history and church politics. Jordan calls it "A Handbook of Reference Material for the Christian Church alumni and those considering joining them." It reveals many of the difficulties and questions of lay persons who are unable to accept pat answers from the Church about faith and the Christian journey. It would be of interest both to those who are seeking and to those who wonder what seekers are reading and discussing. Jordan surveys the writing of many scholars in the Jesus Seminar and other historical Jesus writers. He compares the gospel accounts and other not-canonical writings, the development of the creeds, and gives his own conclusions. In the end, Jordan writes his own "gospel according to me" to sum up his investigations. Although in need of tighter editing, this book is written in an enjoyable and down-to-earth style that shows a serious quest of faith. (The Rev.) Ann Fontaine - Lander, Wyo.
