Lewis was one of the pre-eminent Christian apologists and standard bearers in this century. His forte was in gathering the wisdom of past ages which spoke for Christ and making it a wellspring for the parched intellects and the "spritual barbarism" of the modern world. These essays on Lewis bring together a variety of insights, mostly promotional but some critical. They cover the transformation of his thought and compelling theological arguments, the stability of his faith and idealism, the special influence of G.K. Chesterton and Charles Williams, and his literary journeys into fantasy where "story and imagination render proofs of God unnecessary." Much of the information is new and some very appealing, but the scholarly format tends more toward appreciation by Lewis adepts and aficionados. This is recommended for academic and large public libraries.

This book is NOT overly-scholastic. While it is not written at the middle-school reading level that many books are, it is not difficult to understand. It is an analysis by various authors of Lewis' life and work. If you want to understand Lewis at a level which is beyond the common clap-trap that is written of him, you can do no better.
