Book Description

January 11, 2009
This book is a comprehensive survey of the history and, more particularly, of the thought of Antioch from the second to the eighth centuries of the Christian era. Dr Wallace-Hadrill traces the religious background of Antiochene Christianity and examines in detail aspects of its intellectual life: the exegesis of scripture, the interpretation of history, philosophy, and the doctrine of the nature of God as applied to an understanding of Christ and man's salvation. The community at Antioch stressed history and literalism, in self-conscious opposition to the tendency to allegorise that prevailed at Alexandria. While insisting on the divinity of Christ, they were equally adamant that no other doctrine should be allowed to compromise their central belief that Jesus was really human.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure of Info Regarding Early Church, March 29, 2011

This review is from: Christian Antioch: A Study of Early Christian Thought in the East (Paperback)
While this book may not be for the casual reader, it is one that anyone having more than a passing interest in Church History and Christology should consider purchasing. The author gives a lot of information on the differences between how the Eastern and Western churches approached scripture, the struggle to grind out a working model of the Trinity and Christ's humanity, and other topics. Another positive is that the book is very well footnoted.

Wallace-Hadrill introduces the reader to Sabellism, Nestorianism, Monophysitism, and etc. The one thing that will really hit you is that there was no "one view" as to how and in what sense Christ could be both God and man.

All in all, it's quite a worthwhile book. It's not an easy book to get through - though it is not all that long, just a lot of detail. Well indexed and covering a lot of information, it's a useful reference also. Just don't plan on plowing through it. It's not a "page turner."
