A Treasure of Info Regarding Early Church,

This review is from: Christian Antioch: A Study of Early Christian Thought in the East (Paperback)
While this book may not be for the casual reader, it is one that anyone having more than a passing interest in Church History and Christology should consider purchasing. The author gives a lot of information on the differences between how the Eastern and Western churches approached scripture, the struggle to grind out a working model of the Trinity and Christ's humanity, and other topics. Another positive is that the book is very well footnoted.Wallace-Hadrill introduces the reader to Sabellism, Nestorianism, Monophysitism, and etc. The one thing that will really hit you is that there was no "one view" as to how and in what sense Christ could be both God and man. All in all, it's quite a worthwhile book. It's not an easy book to get through - though it is not all that long, just a lot of detail. Well indexed and covering a lot of information, it's a useful reference also. Just don't plan on plowing through it. It's not a "page turner." |
