5.0 out of 5 stars Completely changed the way I view myself and my Savior
I can't recommend this book highly enough. I have read it and reread it. These men know the Scriptures and they know life in the real world, where the pain of our shortcomings, our failures, our past, and our weakness can deny us a clear perspective of our life in Christ. This book has been a great source of truth, wisdom, and understanding.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fellow Traveler
The authors bring to light many misconceptions; some that I have a personal acquaintance with while some I have observed. This book has helped me to define clearly some disconcerting false assumptions.
The first third or so of the book was down to earth and held my interest but then I seemed to get a feeling that I was reading a manual written by psychiatrists...

5.0 out of 5 stars Should Be Required Reading For All!, June 17, 2000
This review is from: 12 "Christian" Beliefs That Can Drive You Crazy (Paperback)
This book contains so much more than the title even suggests. It is also a thesis on sound mental health and healing from old emotional wounds. Many of the principles from Boundaries are also covered in this book. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to better understand Biblical principles or anybody who wishes to heal from hurts of the past.

4.0 out of 5 stars FALSE ASSUMPTIONS or 12 Beliefs That Can Drive You Crazy, August 16, 2001

First, I ALSO have a degree in Psychology, in fact TWO degrees, Psychology and Counselling. I find that this book is very good. It explores ideas that Christians have or have been taught that may not be entirely accurate or Biblical. Very therapeutic. I read parts of it to a cell group and the group was very interested in studying it. So "Psychobabble" probably did not understand the book and is writing it off. Our group and myself feel VERY MUCH the opposite! Not that every word is true. A few ideas may or may not be true depending on circumstances, but on the whole this book is great and should be read by every Christian! Ever heard the idea, "God first, others second, me third?" Well, IF that were TOTALLY true, then how would you "Love others as yourself?" You would be loving yourself last, if you had time. So does that mean you love others last too? I hope you can see that "God first, others second, me third" sounds very spiritual but is NOT FROM SCRIPTURE. The book points out this and many other false assumptions. The only reason I say 4 stars is because, unless it is the Bible, I find it hard to rate anything 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Literally, my most favorite book..., December 16, 2005
This review is from: 12 "Christian" Beliefs That Can Drive You Crazy (Paperback)
In a very easy read, each chapter reviews a different crazy Christian teaching such as "I just need to give it to the Lord...". It explains how each of our our crazy Christian thinking ways keep us stuck in our problems. The most awesome parts are the very clear explanations of how to address the issues in life that we try to apply these crazy ways to.

If you feel many suggested "Christian" ways to solve problems aren't working, this book is a must. Dr. Cloud is a very sincere Christian who is also incredibly wise in how God made people. His ways for addressing problems are simple, biblically based, and make sense. Best of all, they work!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible becomes a source of health in this book., July 6, 1998

This review is from: 12 "Christian" Beliefs That Can Drive You Crazy (Paperback)
If the Bible makes you feel guilty and/or depressed, yet you want to include it in your life, this book by the authors of "Boundaries" may come as a breath of healing fresh air. The popular title, "The Good Book" (Gomes), points out the dangers and misuses of reading the Bible. This title beautifully compliments it and offers suggestions for using the Bible in a healthy way and/or recovering from "Bible abuse" from well-meaning pastors, family, and friends. This title is also highly recommended for those who have been abused by Christian "recovery" programs, including homosexual change ministries. The author's book, "Boundaries", is a recommended companion reading to this title. Further reading to compliment this title in a deeper treatment is "Inspiration" (Thompson).

WOW! This extremely well written book, which is also extremely timely, is incredibly scripturally accurate. It is also very practical and extremely accurate in helping with life situations. I agree with other comments that this book SHOULD be required reading for everyone; Its application is THAT practical and its overall message SO important. Order it yesterday! P.S. As an avid reader, this is the most HELPFUL book I have read in a very long time. Cloud and Townsend surely have made my Christmas list-They are each going to get a THANK YOU gift for saving my LIFE!

This book needs to be read by anyone with a crisis of faith...or before! So often our 'reasoning' mind starts to see some odd things that we believe are either taught from the Bible, or in Church. In fact, many of these 12 major 'beliefs' have nothing to do with the Christian religion, but 'seem' to be....these two Dr's do a great job of setting the record straight, so you can see the logic and love in the Bible, and not contradiction. This book needs much more media play, it needs to be read by more people, its well recommended!

This book is surprisingly Christian given the "Title". One would think it would bash Christian Beliefs. It does the opposite. It reinforces the truth and shows the paths one needs to follow to adhere to the scriptural beliefs.

This is a very practical book that addresses everyday living. Many common sayings we hear are put into perspective and the correct biblical context. I found the book very encouraging. And, while we need to be demanding of our selves in our walk, we do not need to beat ourselves up.
