What can I say? I laughed, I cried, on a scale of one to ten I give it a two thumbs up! Jim Badke has written a book that is extremely useful for not only for one going into a cabin for a week, but as well as a person who generally has a lot of contact with kids. The Christian Camp Counselor is a great resource on learning about being effective with the kids your in contact with. It gives great advice about situations that may or may not arise, helping a person learn from what Jim Badke has learned over the years. Jim Badke writes from a voice of experience and it is truly demonstrated. I couldn't recommend a better book.

The title is accurate. The Christian Camp Counselor really is about being a Christian and being involved in camping ministry (emphasis on ministry. While the book contains a wealth of practical advice that would serve effectively in secular environments, the author understands camp primarily as a means God can and frequently does use to draw people - both campers and staff - into a closer relationship with him. The Christian Camp Counselor will undoubtably be used as an introductory text, but it will enjoy a longer shelf life as a reference manual. A short review like this gives short shrift to the numerous practical tips imbedded in every section, advice that specifically targets the down-to-earth needs of Christian camp counselors. If you answered yes to either question, The Christian Camp Counselor will be an invaluable resource for you! After reading through it, I found it to be a handy reference guide to help me understand different age groups and give me ideas for addressing challenges with my campers (i.e. building cabin unity, encouraging spiritual growth, and teaching practical lessons about growing up). The Christian Camp Counselor was definitely the tool I needed to be prepared for a summer of camp counseling.

"The Christian Camp Counsellor" has motivated and inspired me in my devotionals and my time & focus on God. It has given me an incredible insight into kids; the way they act, feel, and react, and 'why'. The preparational advice, counselling tips and the general but important game rules of camp overwhelm me when I think of the work that must have gone into them. The footnotes provide excellent reference to verses that I've always loved (and some funny notes), and constantly remind the reader that this book is dedicated to serving God, and that it is no substitute for the real thing; the Bible. Each time I make pick it up, God speaks to me through the pages, and I know it will be essential in my counselling experience this summer. The wisdom and life-experience in every paragraph are invaluable, and the resource section is perrrfect! It's an all-round amazing book.

I have been involved in the field for nearly 20 years. This book clearly covers all the bases of camp counselling,even giving ideas for role play with prospective staff. As a staff trainer, director, program coordinator or as a new counselor, this book will be helpful to fill in the blanks in the scope of the camp experience.I wish I'd had something like this when I started out. I will be using it extensively in the years to come.
