Great Lutheran Theology,
By
This review is from: Christian Dogmatics (4 volumes set) (Hardcover)
This set is the standard work of theology in Confessional Lutheran circles. Pieper covers all major Christian doctrines including Soteriology, the nature of God, eschatology, ecclesiology, and more, all from a Confessional Lutheran perspective. In this series, Pieper stays faithfull to scripture and the confessions. For a good summary and defense of the Lutheran positions on any theological issues, this is the place to go. I began reading these books as a Presbyterian, but after studying his defense of the Lutheran doctrine of the Lord's supper, I have joined Confessional Lutheranism. Pieper faithfully refutes the claims of liberalism, defending the inspiration of scripture and the vicarious satisfaction of Christ for the sins of the world. The one complaint I have is that he at times misrepresents Reformed theology, specifically in writing against Charles Hodge. Having read Hodge's Systematics, it seems that at times he characatures his position on various issues. Aside from this one flaw I highly recommend this set to anyone interested in learning about Lutheran theology.VDMA
