Book Description

February 15, 2011
The Christian Faith is, with the exception of Calvin's Institutes, the most important work covering the whole filed of doctrine to which Protestant theology can point. To say this is not necessarily to adopt either his fundamental principles or the detailed conclusions to which these principles have guided him. On all such matters a nearly unbroken controversy has long prevailed. But, whether for acceptance or rejection, it is necessary for serious students to know what Schleiermacher has to say. -ADAPTED FROM THE PREFACE Long available only in expensive hardcover editions, the Apocryphile Press is proud to make Schleiermacher's classic of theology once more within reach for students and others on a limited budget. This is the second edition of the complete work, originally published in two volumes, but here collected into one.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'The Christian Faith is the one undisputed monument in modern Christian theology. It is the achievement by which everything else must be measured.'
Professor John Clayton, Boston University
'The Christian Faith has proved profoundly influential in the history of modern Christian theology. Even Schleiermacher's critics respect its value. It continues to stimulate creative thought, not least through its Christocentric focus, its attention to the role of human experience, and its deep concern for the role of the believing community in theological reflection. This paperback edition will enable many more people to read the full text for themselves.'
Dr Clive Marsh, College of Ripon and York St John
'Controversial in its own time and since, daring and deeply learning, The Christian Faith is Schleiermacher's attempt to sketch a 'mobile orthodoxy' - informed by the past but free for the present. Translator of Plato, Pietist, Romantic, post-Kantian, pastor and professor, Schleiermacher's work is today recognised to be of signal importance to philosophical hermeneutics. This work shows him also to be a great, theologian of the Word, unfolded as God's plan of love and wisdom for the world.'
Dr Janet Martin Soskice, Jesus College, Cambridge --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Seminal Work in Modern Theology., June 17, 2000

Its no coincidence that Schleiermacher is called the 'father of modern theology.' This classic in systematic theology is indispensible to any theology student tho wants to understand liberal theology. The Christian faith is distinctly Christological in nature. Schleiermacher, because of his Moravian upbringing, has great reverance for Christ (unlike some of the modern theologians who were to follow). Another distinguishing characteristic of the Christian Faith is Schleiermacher's idea of "religion as feeling." For Schleiermacher, feeling was what authenticated religion. Another distiguishing feature is Schleiermacher's opinion of other faiths and Christianity's relation to those faiths. He has quite a progressive notion of religious pluralism for a nineteenth century theologian. In short, no theology scholar should be without this monumental work. As an accomponiment, I suggest you purchase Schleiermacher's "On Religion: Speeches to its Cultured Despisers," which is another book that gave birth to liberal theology. Schleiermacher truly was the greatest theologian between Martin Luther and Karl Barth.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential for understanding modern theology, February 24, 2006

Friedrich Schleiermacher was the founder of Protestant liberalism. His description of the divine as the feeling of "absolute dependence" set the stage for all subsequent attempts to defend the Christian religion against post-Enlightment skepticism toward the truth of religious claims. College and seminary level students will profit from reading the primary source, as opposed to secondary treatments. I use portions of the text in an upper division course in modern theology for Bible and theology majors, knowing that the effort made now will benefit them greatly when they get to seminary.
