To say this is an excellent devotional for horsemen and women is such a huge understatement that I am loathe to try to qualify it at all. I didn't know what to expect when I started reading; maybe something cutesy and trite, but I did not expect the depth of insight author Pauline Creeden infuses into these forty chapters. I am a follower of Jesus and I am intimately knowledgeable about horses and horse training, so this book is right up my alley.

Let me just hush and share my favorite parts: "As followers of Jesus, we are to become all things to all people. The good [horse] trainer...[doesn't] change who [she is as she's training] different horses, just how she [rides] each horse." Day Four. (What an excellent explanation of Apostle Paul's meaning in 1 Cor 9:22!)

And what about Day Nine: (paraphrased) If we take a trained horse and stop his training, expecting him to just stay tuned up for the rest of his life, we are in for a fall. Like the horse, if we don't stay in the Word, constantly learning for the rest of our lives, we will get rusty and eventually become no better than a hay burner and pasture pet (my words, not hers!). But you get the gist -- comparing horse training to Disciple training is expertly done in this devotional.

I won't belabor the examples, but take note of Day 34, regarding sin and the scars it places on our spirits. You will be amazed how Creeden demonstrates biblical principals based on her love of God and her knowledge of horse training.

Kudos to Creeden!

I love this book. The author has shared so many profound insights on the needs and behaviour of horses. An animal I love!
I've never owned a horse, but I have worked with horses and ridden a lot over the years.
The way she explained spiritual truths by using the training of horses, was quite profound.
The book has been designed so that each chapter is a daily reading, which is lovely. And the occasional photographs are a treat.
Chapter Twenty Two really spoke to me. I've prayed the beautifully simple Jabez prayer every morning for years now. Trusting God to protect me and enlarge my borders. And I can say in all honesty He has answered me in so many amazing ways.
If you are a Christian and love horses, you will enjoy and be blessed by this book.

When I got married, one of the hardest things for me to adjust was my devotional time. I love sitting down in the evening time. Right after a shower and before I would go to bed, I would journal, pour my heart out to God on paper and read the Bible, and then drift off in peace. That was my time with God. Kind of makes it difficult when there's someone else in the room. So after nearly 11 years of marriage, I've still haven't figure that out. Of course, we did add kids to the mix. Is there such a thing as quiet time then?

So when I started reading Christian in Training, A 40 Day Devotional by Pauline Creeden, I was like, why haven't I found something like this before? Each chapter is short, almost too short because then you're tempted to read the next chapter and the next one without letting the information sink in. She calls it a 2-minute devotion. It's to the point and simple to understand as she begins each chapter with a verse and an illustration of how our relationship with God is much like the relationship between a horse and its trainer. I love reading stuff like that, because then something clicks in my brain and I have better understanding of my own walk with the Lord.

I recommend, even if you're not a horse lover, you'll appreciate its candor and learn something new about horses.

Love this book. I love that I can relate it to horses and my life with them. They are such a huge part of my life that this was a great experience.

My one and only complaint about this book is that it ended too soon. I read it daily, sometimes reading ahead a day or two, then going back and rereading the previous day's devotions. The author not only knows the Bible, but she knows her horses as well and the analogies she makes are right on target. They teach without preaching, and were a blessing to me.

This devotional is designed to be read in two minutes every day for forty days. Of course, some people will just read it cover to cover like I did and still benefit from Pauline Creeden's insights. She draws on her knowledge of horses (specifically the way they are trained, although she brings in other aspects like feeding, riding, competing, and even physiology too) and makes helpful parallels for people who are trying to grow closer in their walk with God.

Obviously, two minutes a day isn't going to give you a crash course in theology, and that's not the intention of this book. But it's a great little boost for people who like devotionals to draw closer to God (similar in length and style to Our Daily Bread and other devotional booklets like that). The difference between this one book and those devotionals is that all the insights are based on the author's experience with horses. I recommend it to anyone who wants an easy, down-to-earth devotional, and to people who work with horses and are interested in matters of faith and Christianity.
