Book Description

October 1, 2005 1932043330 978-1932043334
Considered an inspirated instrument of God by his followers, Christian Metz organized the scattered elements of a dying eighteen century sect, led the relocation of 800 of the faithful to a new home in New York state in 1842 - 1944 and, finally to Iowa in 1855. Under Metz's leadership, the Inspirationists established a communal system that endured, largely unchanged for nearly ninety years and proved to be one of the most successful and longest lived of the over 250 attempts at communal living undertaken in the United States during the nineteenth century. The community that Metz established reorganized in 1932 into separate religious and business institutions which, nearly a century and a half after his death, remain vital presences in the Amana Colony and larger easter Iowa communities. The members of the Amana Church Society continue to sing many of the Hymns and read from over 3,000 testimonies that Metz delivered over a period of nearly fifty years of leadership.

5.0 out of 5 stars The life of the early founder of Amana, March 17, 2006
This review is from: Christian Metz (Paperback)
F. Alan DuVal's CHRISTIAN METZ: GERMAN-AMERICN RELIGIOUS LEADER & PIONEER surveys the life and influence of the early founder of Amana, who created the Community of True Inspriation, a Pietist sect that founded by the Amana Society in Iowa in 1855. The Amana Colonies still stand today: F. Alan DuVal produced a doctoral dissertation on the man's life and meaning in 1948, and Peter Hoehnle edits the biography for modern readers.
