Book Description

April 7, 2005
Written in a warm, playful, and humorous style, The Christian Single Woman's Guide to Being a Player God's Way shows Christian women how they can have a social life filled with fun activities with the opposite sex without getting caught up in game playing or putting a man before their relationship with the Lord. According to Robinson, one of the most challenging issues that single Christians face is how to develop loving relationships with the opposite sex and still uphold the Lord's standard for love and purity. "When we devote our lives to living according to the standards of Jesus, we give up our worldly standards for dating and our attitudes about the opposite sex, and we take on Jesus' standards for dating and attitudes about the opposite sex. A complete paradigm shift must take place. We have to be taught, mentored, and groomed to assume these roles within this new paradigm." As a single, Christian woman for over 20 years, author Robinson says, "The Christian Single Woman's Guide to Being a Player God's Way, will get you where you and God really want you to be: Single, sassy, satisfied, and having a lot of fun!"

About the Author

Janice D. Robinson has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy. As a forty-something, single, sassy, and satisfied African American woman, Janice’s life journey has taken her from work in the business and marketing arena to full-time ministry with single and married women of all ages, to working in the health care arena, helping people fulfill their desires to live a full, healthy life from a physical, mental, social, and spiritual perspective. Ms. Robinson has lived as a single, devoted, disciple of Jesus Christ for 20 years and has discipled, mentored, and taught on the subject of living the single life “Jesus’ way.” Janice felt inspired to write her book, The Christian Single Woman’s Guide to Being a Player God’s Way, in order to answer one of the most challenging issues that Christian singles face, and that is, how to develop relationships with the opposite sex and still uphold the Lord’s standard for love and purity. “It is my dream that every Christian single person out there will read this book. I feel men would benefit from it as well as the women who read it. I pray that after reading this book, the reader will feel clearer about her (or his) role while dating as a follower of Jesus.”

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't Be A Date Player Hater... God's Way?, April 3, 2006
This review is from: The Christian Single Woman's Guide to Being a Player God's Way: A Practical Humorous Guide To Christian Dating (Paperback)
Author Janice D. Robinson took the time to create a helpful guide for Christian Women who would like to date for friendship and fun and not marriage. In it she takes the reader step-by-step through the stages of dating for women who would like to get married as well.

What I found most encouraging about this guide is that Author Robinson encourages her readers to start with God in prayer. This way she not only gives her personal opinion based on her experiences, but she leaves room for the reader to find her way through prayer for her personal situation. From there she states that we should not "Play the Game." Be up front with the young man you intend to date and do not play games to get him to do what you want and when.

Finally, I appreciate the section that does not insist that women have to be married because they want to date. It is okay to be single and dating without dating to become married. To make it more interesting and fun, Author Robinson provides a Players Club Card at the back of her book to remind single Christian Women that God knows the plans He has for their lives.

Definitely a fun guide to read and an overall helpful outline to dating God's way.

3.0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) - Fellowship, December 30, 2005

This review is from: The Christian Single Woman's Guide to Being a Player God's Way: A Practical Humorous Guide To Christian Dating (Paperback)
THE CHRISTIAN SINGLE WOMAN'S GUIDE TO BEING A PLAYER GOD'S WAY by Janice D. Robinson offers sound advice to women (and men) on how to seek out other Christians and learn to fellowship. In a light-hearted and conversational manner, Robinson informs readers of her five dating stages and delivers pearls of wisdom such as first start with the Lord, don't play the game, and enjoy the ride. Good, relevant scriptures and references to other relationship books strengthens Robinson's point of view, and the user-friendly style of the book make it a quick, easy read for everyone.

Although there isn't much to not like in this quick guide, there are a few tools that could have made it more effective. Additional scriptures, examples, scenarios, details, and/or information on the important points would make this read much stronger and beneficial. Regardless, the helpful tidbits that Robinson does bless the literary community with are able to get willing readers going in the right direction towards Christian fellowshipping.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Advice for Everyone, December 8, 2005
This review is from: The Christian Single Woman's Guide to Being a Player God's Way: A Practical Humorous Guide To Christian Dating (Paperback)
So, what's a milky-white, middle-aged, married man doing reading a book about dating written by a single, sassy, African American woman? That's a reasonable question with two answers: I know the author and my rule is that if I know someone who is published, I read their work. The other reason is that I was curious as to how Ms. Robinson was going to approach the issue of intimacy in dating relationships between two Christians.

The Christian Single Woman's Guide to Being a Player God's Way is exactly what it claims to be; a practical guide which is written in good humor. Although it's merely a "tidbit" as books go (24 pages), it is full of good advice and useful information which Ms. Robinson has drawn from interviews and her personal experiences as well as from Dr. John Grey's, Men are from Mars; Women are from Venus and The Bible.

I really like the way this book is organized and particularly like the chapter entitled "The Dating Stages." When reflecting on my own experiences, I can personally vouch for what is written in these pages. As for the loop hole that provides a way to enjoy sexual relations and "be a player God's way," it doesn't exist. Furthermore, Ms. Robinson advises us to "surrender...sellout to the Lord, totally in every area of your life." She acknowledges that resisting the temptations that arise in a dating relationship requires personal strength and sometimes council from good friends, but that we owe it to God to try to live as he has shown us to live and that if we do we will be rewarded with peace of mind and "satisfaction." As most of us know, honest, practical advice usually isn't easy to follow so we're reminded of God's mercy and the power of forgiveness. Clearly though, forgiveness is not a loophole.

Although it's serious stuff, Ms. Robinson manages to keep her book light and entertaining while treating the subject with dignity. I enjoyed reading this book because it gave me further insight into Ms. Robinson's character and it is truly written in her voice. I also liked her frank discussion of accepting Jesus as personal savior. Many times that is presented as a dull life of commitment filled with compromises and an abstract reward upon death. This book reminds us that God has a plan for us, and living our lives as he asks us is to fulfill that plan and replace frustration with satisfaction. And, it can be fun.
