Editorial Reviews

Review

'In this lively and engaging volume Arthur Holder has provided the academic and formative communities that critically study and read classical spiritual texts for transformative purposes a book that is likely to shape the introductory courses on the history of Christian spirituality for the forseeable future ... These essays are so good, so elegant and written in such a scholarly and heartfelf manner, that anyone reading them will want to read the classic texts themselves ... [an] extraordinarily useful volume.' – Janet K. Ruffing, Fordham University, USA, Horizons: Journal of the College Theology Society vol. 36, no. 2 (2009)

'This volume contains thirty essays about major spiritual texts from the second century to the twentieth; it will introduce the reader, in a most lively and accessible manner, to many central aspects of human life lived towards God today; it is both an introduction to these writings and an invitation to explore them deeply and personally.' – Benedicta Ward, Oxford University, UK

'It is rare when one can say that every essay in a collaborative work is worth reading, but that is definitely the case here. ... This volume should be considered for adoption in many courses on spirituality and Christian history.' – Don H. Compier, St. Paul School of Theology, Anglican and Episcopal History

Format: Paperback
Editor Arthur Holder has in "Christian Spirituality" assembled thirty prominent scholars to provide us with a comprehensive guide to the origins and richness of Christian Spirituality. Each scholar offers their expert views on thirty foundational texts, each authored by one of the giants in the Christian tradition, from "Origen and Augustine to Jonathan Edwards, Therese of Lisieux and Thomas Merton."

Each chapter provides an introduction to a highly regarded classical text, background on the author and his or her audience, a synopsis of the text, an understanding of key learnings, the influence of the text over time, and the relevance of the text today.

A sampling of the Chapters includes:
* Benedict of Nursia's "The Rule"
* Bernard of Clairvaux's "Loving God"
* Catherine of Sienna's "Dialogue"
* Martin Luther's "Freedom of a Christian"
* John the Cross' "The Dark Night"
* Francis de Sales' "Introduction to the Devout Life"
* "The Way of the Pilgrim" (Anonymous)
* Dietrich Bonhoffer's "Life Together"

Each text is powerful and the scholars bring them to life inspiring us to reflect and meditate on their wisdom, on their religious truths, and how they can make a difference in our lives. These texts have "made a profound difference in the lives of generations of readers over hundreds to thousands of years" and will continue to do so for many more years in the future.

Holder, the John Dillenberger Professor of Christian Spirituality at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Ca and former President of the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality, invites us to learn from "Christian Spirituality" about:

* The meaning of life?
* How we can find truth?

It is important to understand the evolution of our religious belief. How we moved from the Old Testament to the New Testament, and now, what is the next step. I think that these classics in Christian Spirituality point the way forward. The objective of the Christian to reunite with God is a realistic goal that has a history!
